What is your favorite region within a published setting?

A comment by Yora in the D&D 5e settings thread about the North got me thinking about specific regions of published settings and how they often are superior on their own then as a part of an often hodge-podge, aka "kitchen sink," campaign world.

My question to you is explained by the title, but I will recommend that you think as both a DM, a player, and a setting aficionado; what is your favorite region of a published setting? What is the most fun to play in, to DM (with a wealth of detail and arcane lore, etc), and to read about? And why?

I think we can be flexible about the definition of "region," but it should be big enough that a whole campaign (level 1-20) could be run in it, but not continental in size...maybe roughly 500 x 500 miles or smaller. But again, there is no sharp definition.

I can't personally narrow it down, but the North of the Forgotten Realms is up there. It seems to have a bit of everything, with both a distinct theme and qualities, but also a diversity of locations, from Waterdeep to Anauroch.

On other side of Anauroch, the Dalelands-Moonsea region is also rather iconic.

In Greyhawk, you can't do much better than the Greyhawk region itself, from the Wild Coast to the southwest, the Bright Desert to the southeast, the Mistmarsh, etc.

For me, one of the big reasons I like Greyhawk in its original form is that there is a lot of white space for me to do my own design in, but the world gives me just enough detail to get me started.

Thus, after many years of play, I'm very familiar with the environs of the Free City of Greyhawk and the County of Ulek, both of which have had several campaigns played in their borders. My versions might not be "official", but they're certainly where I enjoy playing. (One of my two Greyhawk games at present is set in Greyhawk, but the other is the lands of the Frost Barbarians, as I like visiting other places and exploring them).

In the Realms, I have a soft spot for the original Dalelands and for the recent Neverwinter (thanks to the excellent 4e sourcebook).

Cheers!

Sigil in Planescape. Because Sigil. :D

Ustalav in Golarion, because fantasy transylvania dwelling in the long shadow of the Whispering Tyrant is just ten flavors of awesome. Wesley Schneider did an amazing job with this place and I've spent the last two months of my Pathfinder campaign in Ustalav.

Second to Ustalav: The Worldwound, also in Golarion. Demons, demons, more demons and crusaders both legitimate and false.

I always liked the Valley of Wolves in Mystara (from PC4: Nighthowlers). Full of nifty lycanthropic weirdness.

I also have a soft spot for Vorostokov (a Russian themed Domain in Ravenloft, with its own brand of lycanthropes).

Cheliax in Golarion is a lot of fun. We also had a lot of fun in the Wild Coast and Pomarj in Greyhawk. All over Al-Qadim. And Kara-Tur.

I really enjoy the Greyhawk post-wars region of: Furyondy, Veluna, Verbobonc, Highfolk, the Shield Lands, and the Empire of Iuz; especially focusing in on the County of Crystalreach and the Great Northern Crusade. I enjoy running and playing in games with a heavy dose of politics, intrigue, and large-scale military engagements. I find that this region is ripe for such a game.
