If we are going to play this game, we should all play by the same rules.
Incomplete rules sample to follow:
Step #2 (determine your level):
Roll a d6 + 9. This is the age you first started gaining experience points. Alternately, determine this introspectively by deciding when you first started taking life seriously. Only people who are orphaned, abused as children, refugees in a war, born into the household of a major political figure, etc. could consider this age to be below 10. Certain carefree people and slackers may want to set this age post 15.
Assume you gain 200 xp per year for each year since that point. For instance, if you started taking life seriously at 14, and you are now 29, you have base 3000 xp - good for 3rd level.
Add the following bonuses:
+300 xp for finishing high school.
+300 xp for other part time weekly long period training engaged in for longer than 2 years - ei piano lessons, riding lessons, ballet lessons, martial arts training, etc. - provided you took such lessons seriously. If you are largely self taught (for instance learned to ride growing up on a farm with horses), take only one half the normal bonus. Do not take more than three such bonuses (including high school) for any 2 year period; no one has that much time.
+300 xp for each additional 4 years of such training. If you are largely self taught, take only one half the normal bonus.
+300 xp for each advanced professional certification you have - such as CPA, master in a craft (for instance plumber, sheet metal worker), etc.
+1000 xp for each completed college degree.
+2000 xp for earning MD.
+1000 xp for basic military training or equivalent intense relatively long term full time training course.
+1000 xp for each advanced military training course you have completed (advanced infantry, airborne, sniper, demolitions, etc.)
Heroic bonuses:
+300 xp for each life threatening encounter you not only survived but triumphed in - ei trapped with no shelter in wilderness during blizzard, capasized boat in open ocean and self rescued, broke leg in desert and hiked out alone by night, attacked by mugger/rapist but overcame attacker, military engagement in which you took and returned fire, etc. Half the normal bonus if you were not acting alone.
+300 xp for each year of hazardous duty - working in ER, police officer or fire fighter, tour of duty in combat zone, test pilot, incarcerated in a jail, member of violent street gang, etc..
By this system I have about 4000 xp - good for 3rd level. None of it it is heroic, fortunately. (Though I have been through some violent and traumatic experiences, I fairly sure none of them were life threatening in a significant way.)
Step #3: Determine class
Apply your xp towards classes as appropriate to your background. If you do not qualify for a heroic xp bonus, assume you are of NPC classes (expert, commoner, ordinary, warrior). If you did not earn your heroic xp bonus prior to gaining enough xp for at least one level, assume you have at least one level of an NPC class. Just because you do have an xp bonus, does not necessarily mean that you have full PC or heroic classes. If the heroic xp only constitutes a small portion of your experience, heroic classes should also be an equivalently small portion of your total classes.
Do not take a level in a class with spell casting abilities unless you can demonstrate those abilities.
