We have one store that is a pure gaming store -- won't go there because the owners swear like drunken sailors and I'm generally with my 6-year old when I'm shopping for games.
Also, they really opened it so they could clear thier old junk out of their basement (or mother's basement as the case may be). Used stuff is not marked and is intermixed with the new material. I give them a year, maybe two.

We have another that has one rack of rpg stuff (almost exclusively WotC), tons and tons of Warhammer, and some hobby games. 80% of the store is devoted to other games, toys, hobbies. It's a bit out of the way, much more expensive than online, and the rpg selections is weak.

We have a third that's not so much of a LGS as a large comic book store with a corner devoted to new and used rpg materials. If I want to page through something new, I tend to go there.

Generally -- most (perhaps 90%) of my rpg gaming material I buy off of Amazon or RPGshop. Cheaper. Instant selection, and in some cases (amazon) you can 'peek' inside the book. I buy miniatures from the local store with the warhammer fetish

Our gaming store scene is pretty good here in MN.

Heres a list of the ones within 30 Mins:

The Source- Maybe the best gaming store in the midwest?
Phoenix Games- Oldest gaming store in MN.
Unicorn Games- Smaller store on the east side of the cities.
Mist Mountain- New store in the southern suburbs.
Village Games- Larger game store in Anoka, north of minneapolis
Gamers Den- Small store in Cambridge, north of Minneapolis
Monster Den- Carrys some RPGs and has a lot of playing space but also does XBOX gaming and a lot of CCGs
Outpost 2000 South- the smaller of the two out posts in Brooklyn Park. Has pretty good amount of gaming space and concentrates on d20 and board games. Has to large private rooms for RPing.
Outpost 2000 North- The larger of the two stores carrys same sort of stuff, just more of it. They also have their comic werehouse there with over 500k comics.
Dreamers- Mostly a CCG / Minis/ LAN store but does carry most of the popular d20 stuff and White-Wolf games. has plenty of gaming space.

I think there are a couple of newer stores that just opened in the last year, but I haven't been to them.

other places to buy games that don't have gaming space:

B&N
Borders
Shinders (Chain stores)
Air Traffic ( Chain Stores)
Several Half Price Books and other used book sellers

I have a few in my city (all within about a 45 minute drive). The one I like(d) moved way hell and gone to the other side of the city, one relatively nearby gets stuff in weeks late, and I haven't bothered going to the third that I know of.

I just order from Amazon.ca now, and reduced my spending by orders of magnitude, since I can no longer peruse the book before buying. (But if you're a 3rd party publisher and you're on Amazon.ca, you have a chance. Not there? You don't even get a consideration.)

I just discovered a new LGS thanks to Free RPG Day, so I have one small LGS 15 minutes away and this new place 30 minutes away and not too far from my route to work. I stopped in on Saturday to check out the Free RPG swag and to check out the store in general. Not a bad place, I guess.

I just don't frequent any LGS very much any more. Finances as well as the lack of a gaming group probably has a lot to do with that.

Sorry to seem nitpicky but what are we considering local for the purpose of this discussion 30 minutes by car, 60 minutes?
All of the ones I listed are within 20 minutes by car (traffic notwithstanding).

I have two within 30 minutes of my home (one of which is about 15 minutes away) and one within 30 minutes of my work. I probably visit the one within 15 minutes a couple times a month. The one close to my work probably once a month. I am speaking of Southeastern Massachusetts and there might be even more stores of which I have no knowledge of in the area.

There are 4 shops that sell RPGs within 30 minutes walking distance from my house. One I don't go to anymore because the owner is an ass. Another I only visit infrequently as his selection is limited to WotC stuff only. The other 2 I am a regular customer and spend about $75 per month split 30/70 between the two.
