What item(s), magical or not, do you get for every single one of your PCs and why?

Beyond the pretty obvious, rations, torches, etc, what items do you usually end up getting for every single one of your characters you play?

For example, I love caltrops and always get them. No one else in my group really does, but I love them. :)

several pieces of chalk (in different colors)-used for marking the way in dungeons, or for leaving messages on rocks, in caves, etc.

a pouch of powdered chalk-great when facing an invisible enemy (ever been in a closed room and clapped a few chalkboard erasers? dust settles on EVERYTHING!), or to cause someone to choke and sneeze by throwing it in their face

a small mirror-useful for signaling, or to watch to see if you are being followed

string-useful to set simple traps, or in conjunction with fish hooks to catch a meal

fish hooks-if you are hungy and there is a stream nearby, also useful for pinning a scrap of colored cloth to the back of someones cloak if you want to flag them for some reason (following them in a crowded marketplace, etc)

Nothing that is ubiquitously always there, but here are two frequent items in our campaigns.

The Tricked Rope (a small length of rope enchanted (SKR: neener, neener!:p) with the rope trick spell, that can be activated once per day, for usually around 8 hours.

The Ioun Flame: Just a dull gray ioun stones (those do not exist anymore in 3.5, sob) with continual flame cast on it. Hand-free torch.

Any time I play an arcane spellcaster, that character has a signet ring with his/her arcane mark on it.

My characters also always have ink, quill, and blank scrolls, even if they only seldom get the opportunity to write anything on it.

50 feet of waxed twine. The sort they use for sail cloth.

10 X 10 foot piece of waxed canvas.

A hatchet.

With these three things in the woods you can provide for yourself and build all manner of things.

From shelter to hunting for food or binding prisoners. (waxed twine is strong and very very hard to untie once knotted.)

That's just my basics that and paper and pen/ink. Always gotta make notes.

50' rope
continual light jewlery -
thick black pouch for stashing the previous
waterskin
large knife
change of clothes

Amulet of natural armor
Cloak of resistance
- cheap, easy to make = easy to find
potion of CLW

Dagger -- you whittle with it, you eat with it, you fight with it, you light fires with it, etc. Everyone needs one.

Belt pouch -- you always need small things

Backpack -- you need somewhere to keep your goods

Bedroll -- you need a good blanket (okay, I did have one ranger who didn't have this, but...)

In other words, the true basics ;)

Potion(s) of Lesser Restoration.

Every once in a while the party will take lots of ability damage from poison/undead/etc and the Cleric just won't have enough LR's to go around.
