I always wondered why they were named wood blue dye, and assumed there were some arcane reasons behind the name.
BTW, there's a wood wose spell in Masters of the Wild and Complete Divine... This may explain why they looked for another word... And probably just chose one that one. Wood Wight would have meant the same thing as Wood Wose, but in the D&D context, it would have given it a necromantic aspect that isn't appropriate.
