What languages do you speak?

In this thread on the EN World d20 Publisher's forum, sotterraneo (from Italy) was asking d20 Publishers about the European market and how it is viewed. Along those lines I would like to ask EN Boarders the following questions.

1.) Where do you live? (Country, community, etc. at whatever level of disclosure you feel comfortable.)

2.) What is the primary language in your area? (...and is it a notably different dialect than its original?)

3.) What languages do you speak? (...and dialect if appropriate, please)

4.) At what level of competency? (...if other than your primary language.)

5.) What language do you use at the gaming table? (...or in online games?)

6.) In what language are the gaming materials you use? (...and is it the language you prefer to use for gaming?)

7.) How well serviced is the area in which you live in regard to gaming materials? (Miles/Kilometers to the nearest game store, what materials do they carry, etc.)

On a side note, anyone who speaks a langauge other than English and who might like to participate in a project translating gaming materials into a language other than English, please contact me via Email (in English, please :) ) at the following address-

1.) Where do you live? (Country, community, etc. at whatever level of disclosure you feel comfortable.)
Reykjavík, Iceland.

2.) What is the primary language in your area? (...and is it a notably different dialect than its original?)
Icelandic, with a strange mix of a Reykjavík and a south-eastern accent.

I was brought up in Reykjavík but by people who speak with the south-eastern accent.

3.) What languages do you speak? (...and dialect if appropriate, please)

4.) At what level of competency? (...if other than your primary language.)
I speak english pretty well (heavy accent, but brits always understand me and most yanks (get sometimes in problems with the southern ones)).

I speak a tad bit danish. We're taught it in school, but it's my weakest subject. I can read it pretty well and write it with some accuracy but I can't speak it or understand well spoken.

I know a bit german, Some everyday phrases and stuff I've picked up from RAMMSTEIN lyrics.

I understand faerioan pretty well. But that's just because it sounds like Icelandic with a heavy danish accent and slang.

5.) What language do you use at the gaming table? (...or in online games?)
Icenglish. A weird mix of Icelandic and english only understood by gamers.

6.) In what language are the gaming materials you use? (...and is it the language you prefer to use for gaming?)
All the stuff is in english and I like it like that just fine.

7.) How well serviced is the area in which you live in regard to gaming materials? (Miles/Kilometers to the nearest game store, what materials do they carry, etc.)
There are only two stores in the city that I know of that sell RPGs in any real quantity. They're both easily accessable by public transports.

One holds only the WotC and WW stuff (not SSS).

The other holds pretty much all of the stuff that's on the market. They don't have it all in the shelves but you can order pretty much everything gaming related. They have these lists of theirs where they list everything you can buy each month.

England, the south coast of.

2.) What is the primary language in your area? (...and is it a notably different dialect than its original?)

That'll be English. About as close to the original dialect as you'll get in this world. :)

3.) What languages do you speak? (...and dialect if appropriate, please)

Just English. Unless you count a bare minimum of French and Japanese.

4.) At what level of competency? (...if other than your primary language.)

French... only what I learned in school. Forgotten most of it.

Japanese - I used to know enough to get by in conversation. Again, I've forgotten it all!

5.) What language do you use at the gaming table? (...or in online games?)

Just English.

6.) In what language are the gaming materials you use? (...and is it the language you prefer to use for gaming?)

Just English. And yes.

5 minute walk to gaming stores. Carries all WotC stuff, some D20 (not all that much, though). Doesn't get Dungeon/Poly. Grrr....

1. Almaty, Kazakhstan, but I am an American working over here.

2. Russian is prime here.

3. and 4. English native, Russian fluent, Kazakh with difficulty.

5. Russian 90%, English 10%. Sometimes I just can't describe things eloquenly enough and I have to have one of the players translate from my english into native Russian.

6. English

7. Of course not. Locals order MTG and D&D stuff from amazon uk or I bring it.

Russian materials would be a serious hit. I hope WotC learns this some day. The Russian character ( and that goes for all parts of the former USSR) lends well to myth and storytelling.

Eh... I might be spelling it wrong.

Færeyjar. Fareoran. Faeroan. Faeroinan????

Islands south-east of Iceland, under danish control, population of 50 000 or so, there was recently found oil there...

Can someone help me on this one.

1.) Where do you live? (Country, community, etc. at whatever level of disclosure you feel comfortable.)

The United States and Taiwan, depending on what my day job currently is. Right now, I'm a freelancer so I go back and forth.

2.) What is the primary language in your area? (...and is it a notably different dialect than its original?)

Mandarin Chinese, Taiwanese.

3.) What languages do you speak? (...and dialect if appropriate, please)

4.) At what level of competency? (...if other than your primary language.)

English (fluent - mother tongue), Mandarin Chinese (fluent), Taiwanese (simple, mostly curse words). In HS I studied, but no longer speak, French and German and in university I studied, but barely speak, Japanese.

5.) What language do you use at the gaming table? (...or in online games?)

I use English and Military Technobabble cuz my pal Legion used to be a Green Beret and he's a bit of simpleton when it comes to the English language :)

6.) In what language are the gaming materials you use? (...and is it the language you prefer to use for gaming?)

English.

In the States, I live 1.5 miles from the nearest game store. It's got an excellent selection of everything.

In Asia, the nearest real game store is in Japan, the Yellow Submarine I believe. Not so convenient for me :(

Mastermind,

Very strange for a college guy in Alabama USA, but my linguistics professor studies Creole languages ... that is, languages made up of other languages that are sufficiently different to constitute their own language.

If I remember correctly that Dutch controlled island you're talking about she studied on, and she speaks that language fluently.

She also speaks fluent Haitian and several carribean creoles. Very strange because she has a noticable New York City accent, and she can suddenly shift into a thick islander languages.
