What makes a good pre-printed Battlemat?

I definitely echo the keep it generic enough to reuse easily. The value goes up if I can feel like I can use the same mat on several different occasions. Anything too unique makes it harder to reuse in the future.

I've taken my paper maps and battle mats to a teacher's store that has a poster laminating machine using 3 mil (per side?). It rolls up easy but lays flat more easily than thicker laminates. They run things through one after another and just give you the whole roll. You then have to trim them yourselves. I've done it easily enough leaving a quarter inch or so around all edges. I think they did it for $1.25 a linear foot and I believe they could only do up to 36 (38?) inches wide. This was a couple/few years ago so some details might be different or have changed. IIRC, I had 14 or 15 maps done for around $70 or so. If you aren't in the Chicago area, there might be such a store in your area.
