What monsters do you want to see in Dragon magazine? (#3)

I especially like mapmakers. I mentioned them (along with a handful of similarly obscure races) in my latest Secret Project for Wizards of the Coast, so some sort of revisit might be in order.

Man, I'm so glad to hear that. I figured when I mentioned mapmakers in the nomination thread that they'd meet with no interest at all. It's cool that someone else thought they were interesting.

Dark Dwellers I love also, but I can see why they may not make the cut. One could simply assume they're a troll offshoot and just rework troll stats a bit. But that pic of a Dark Dweller riding an allosaurus really fired my imagination way back when.

I was interested (and pleased) to see a White Dwarf critter listed in the poll (birch spirit). Out of curiosity, are these fair game for updating and publishing in something like Dragon, or has that been determined?

Do these creatures belong to TSR/WotC or GW?

I'm pretty sure GW has the rights exclusively. My understanding is that most of the classic D&D content that appeared in WD was done either under an informal, gentlemen's agreement between GW and TSR, or under fair use principles. The monsters that appeared in the Fiend Folio were a pretty special arrangement, and I think negotiating the rights between the original authors, GW, and TSR held up publication of the FF for several months.

Theoretically, it seems like GW could do a d20 "Best of the White Dwarf" book, which would be really awesome. But in reality, I think all that cool D&D content is probably off limits except maybe for fan conversions

i suspect, strongly, that they are not fair game. still, if this one gets enough votes (and it is close), i will stick it in ye olde query just to see what happens, explainging that it came from WD. paizo may say "OK, let's have a look", they may say "no way, no how, can't do it" or they may just say no with no explanation.

as popular of a choice as it is here (and surprising, i think), the dabus seems like a bit of a niche creature to me. basically all flavor, not likely to be encountered by anyone outside of Sigil. it would work great in an article about Sigil or the LoP, but i have my doubts about it going anywhere in the CC article format... :\

Ahh, wish I would've read the descriptions before I voted as well. Some of these seem pretty cool. I would also vote for the fungal ghost.

OK, I’m calling this one done, or at least good enough.

I normally take the top 20 of these things, and looking at everything that got at least 8 votes as of this moment, we have:

Bionoid, Clockwork Swordsman, Dabus, Demarax, Firelich, Garmorm, Gautiere, Great Elder Wyrm, Linqua, Moilian Heart, Ni’ath, Piranha Bats, Poltergiest from DR#55, Rohch, Stwinger, Thrax, Tirapheg, Utukku, Wastrel, and Wraithworm.

However. Since Erik Mona has openly stated his dislike for the Stwinger and Tirapheg, I have strong doubts that they’ll be appearing in Dragon anytime soon (unless we can figure out some concept to make them super-cool), so… I’m going to count them as “bonus” monsters, so that we’re sending in 20 that have a better chance than those two, at least.

Therefore, we need 2 more, from the ones that got 7 votes. I’m invoking my special “it was my idea” privileges and promoting the Mapmaker. Therefore, we have these remaining to choose from:

Birch Spirit
Chagmat
Fire-Eye Lizard
Ghuuna
Golem, Nyraala
Mole Dragon
Mortiss

Since I cheated anyway, I’m not going to nominate anything.

What I’m going to do is, I’m going to take the first one of those which gets two nominations. What you do is, pick one and post to say what you prefer. The first creature to get two such nominations will be our, well, 22nd monster.
