D&D 5E What new classes do you think we need?

The Runesmith suggestion is interesting. What would that look like, in 5e terms?

I agree that a 'Pokemon' or 'Summoner' class where you get a pet that levels up and does 75%+ of the damage output of the character would be fun. I can imagine a lot of interesting subclasses for that, including 'magical artefact', where you have a genie or a sentient flying sword or whatever under your control. Mearls has said that the action economy issues around summoning are a big problem; but one character with a single pet that levels up as they do should work fine. It also gives players the option between PHB Beastmaster (strong character, weak pet), Revised Beastmaster (medium character, medium pet) and Summoner (weak character, strong pet) which should cover most itches.

Here's my challenge - respond to this question with an archetype, character from a book/movie, etc. Do not respond to it with a D&D class. Because we all have classes with fond memories, but often it's really the mechanics or that-particular-character we miss, when the concept could be done with reskinning or perhaps with non-intrusive changes. (Example of non-intrusive change: paladin with Int instead of Chr and perhaps updated spell lsit would make a great gish.)

I think we'll find the list is a lot different.

None. Definitely not Warlord. (Sorry, I just gotta say it.)

If we absolutely have to add a class, some kind of spiritualist caster would by my preference. Something that would span Witch-doctor and Shaman. Part druid, part sorcerer.

EDIT: And part-bard, really.

The lone scholar who spends days carving runes into items to give them mystical properties.

The mystic who communes and invokes various spirits to grant boons or inflicts curses.

Which character from which movie/book/tale is that?

Again, which character from which story?

Only asking because you were specifically responding to the post asking for that.

Who says it's a movie?
The former is based (somewhat loosely) on the Death Gate Cycle, while the latter is partial based on the 4e Shaman, but also draws from celric folklore, paganism, and more asain mythology (and a little bit of Nioh).

Ooh, a warlock with druid spell access would be neat!

I have been hoping for nature/arcane mixes for a while, and that one in particular (the archfey doesn't feel "nature" enough for me). It seems like parts of 4e fluff are being adopted into 5e (like the Raven Queen in the warlock UA), I could see a primal spirit patron warlock (they could even have always been in FR, but since they aren't gods or archfiends, they had no reason to advertise, so no one in the adventures/novels knew anything about them).

Yeah, that's fine. It just doesn't answer the question you were quoting.

Except you asked for 'a movie, book, etc.'

With the exception of the 4e Shaman influences, all of those draw from outside media, which is what you were asking for.

You didn't ask for a character, you asked for an "archetype, character, etc." I provided archetypes.

When asked what could be a ''needed'' new class, I challenge myself to find 3 archetypes to go in that class concept. Most of the time I cant, telling me that this concept would be better implemented in an archetype. For example, the witch-doctor thing if better suited for a new ''spirit world'' patron mixing druid spell and necromancy. Unless you prefer the Diablo version with his flask of critters, enchanted mask and totem, then it would make for a great artificer subclasse.
