Dana, I guess the bottom line is that no one gives a rat's a$$ what you think. I dont know who your short list of "peers" is, but I know who the movers and shakers are in the publishing world and you arent on that list believe me. Neither am I, frankly. But then I didnt start a thread pretending to be a big shot.

So, please, feel free to be a company nobody has heard of and lecture everyone else about vanity publishers and act like some big shot. Yeah, good idea. That goes over well. Good plan.

Well, maybe you should stick your head out the door more often. Unlike you, enough people have heard of my work that I have no need to rely on alliances with other publishers to sell products.

Incidentally, my list of peers is long, not short. Those who know me know I'm blunt to a fault. To quote Guy McLimore, executive editor of Microtactix in regards to a mailing list we were both part of a few years ago: "He was also often right and always worth listening to..."

The bottom line is that most publishers don't - and perhaps shouldn't - give a rat's @$$ about what any other publisher thinks about them or their work (unless it's of a "violation of license, I will sue" nature). Publishers should be much more concerned about what their customers think about them and selling products than be concerned about what their fellow publishers think and in winning popularity contests amongst them (though being able to both is a nice bonus LOL).

Clark's right, Dana - most publishers don't care what you think of their work. That's not because of you personally, it's because they don't much care what ANYONE who's not a customer thinks of their work... in the same way you don't care what Clark thinks of your work or what I think of your work and I don't care what Clark thinks of my work and Clark doesn't care what I think of his work. We can all blissfully ignore each others' opinions of one another together.

I'm not insinuating that it's good for publishers to ignore constructive criticism, but all criticism should be taken with a grain of salt - and I wouldn't blame a publisher one bit for assigning the same amount of "weight" to the comments of a fellow publisher as they do to a "non-publisher" customer - i.e., you buy one book, you get one vote... same as the non-publisher.

As someone who has been working around you for years, I have to say that I have NEVER heard you give praise instead of negative reviews for anything you weren't directly involved in.

I'm not saying you haven't, but I have yet to see it.

I'll agree with Orcus on one thing; this thread's kinda entertaining.

Word of advice, though. There's a lot of people weighing in here, so if you're going to piss at someone, try to make it clear whom you're talking to. As a simple example:

Dear Santa,

For Christmas this year, I want a good strong stable economy where consumers have enough disposable cash to buy all the products made with love by mom and pop operations, so that mom and pop can pay for rent, while still producing products for those who like them.
