What powers do Jedi and Sith actually have?

Watching Ep2 last night, my wife asked why Yoda, or any Jedi for that matter, didn't use Force Lightning like the Emperor or Count Dooku. Not being a fanatic, I told her I didn't know. So here's my question to you guys: What powers do Jedi and Sith actually have? Are they that far removed from one another?

There are light side and dark side powers.

Now, who knows how Lucas feels about the various force powers and what people can and can not do. So take this with a grain of salt. But imagine the force powers like a chinese menu. Any one can select from column "a" (lightsabers, jumping, etc). You need to be light side to select from column "b" (healing, turning into a blue glowie, etc.) And you need to be dark side to select from column "c" (lightning, telekenetic choaks, etc).

Hope that helps!

I figured it worked like that. :)

Does anyone have a list of the actual powers?

Not for the movies...but the Jedi Knight games have a great divide of how the powers work, though many of them were created for the games.

Ya, that's my only reference (Knights of the Old Republic) but it has things like "Heal" and I've never seen a Jedi heal anyone else.

You could check the SW RPG, but there's lots of crazy stuff in there (like Force Flight) which isn't in the movies, and as GL has always stated, only the movies are canon.

Basically, any time the Force is used to directly harm someone, it's a Dark Side power. And while Jedi can use these powers, doing so leads down the path to the Dark Side.

My thoughts are they pretty much have the same powers. What makes one a Jedi or Sith is which you chose to use, or how you use the force in general. I am sure a Jedi can do the Force choke it is just that's a pretty cruel. Same thing for the lightning.

But that is just my opinion. And we know what that is worth. :D

Actually, anything not invalidated by Lucas' works are canon. :) Lucas Licensing deals with all of that kind of thing.

Pretty much the best view of things without listing things out. SWd20 is probably something you could check out, but its lists are pretty much derived from what we see in the movies and the Jedi Knight games(which seem to have influenced everything since with Absorb, etc)
