IMO, there's nothing a little will can't overcome.

Unless it's kender. Or tinker gnomes.

Back in the 2e days the only race I wouldn't really consider were half-elves. My hat of AD&D hafl-efl no know limit! The design philosophy behind that must have been, "Elves are great, but level limits suck. Let's make a race that has all of the benefits of being an elf without any of its penalties!!! Half-Elves are kewl!"

Nowadays I still won't play half-elves, but not because they're horrificly overpowered. Half-elves and half-orcs are in the same boat. They're not different enough from a human to make me want to sacrifice the extra skill points and feat.

I generally can't see myself playing halflings or gnomes either, but for a different reason. I feel like the races are too one-dimensional. It's hard to make anything with a halfling but a rogue that isn't a sub-optimal build. Gnomes are generally double-plus-ungood as well because they don't even really make good bards. You lose damage on your weapons and speed in exchange for little. Maybe I could be talked into a halfling wizard, but that's about it.

I like humans. Most of my characters are humans because the extra feat at first level is a massive boost. I like elves. I play a lot of elven bards and rangers. The loss of speed for a dwarf doesn't bother me because they scream fighter and cleric, two builds that benefit greatly from heavy armor, something a dwarf is built to wear.

Drow - I am of the mindset they are NPCs and never player characters, then there is seeing them as "Oh, they are so cool" factor from other gamers, a good background and concept will get you further than cool any day.

Gnome - how do they fit in, very limited by their hindrances, and all good benefits are dupes

Half elf - Not really well defined from elf or human

Elves (this includes drow), I can't stand em, maybe its just left over from the 2nd edition days, but I hate elves and will never ever ever play an elf unless its a gameday or something with pregenerated characters and there are none left for me to choose from. At which point this elf will promptly chop off his pointy spock like ears and fall on his sword for the betterment of the campaign world.

Now dwarves on the other hand, thats a race I can drink a 5th of absolute to. Ah yes my current character is a dwarf and by far my favorite race. I also like gnomes, halflings, humans, and half-orcs as characters. Now that I think about it, I'm not real fond of half-elves either.

I can and will play anything and I don't have a problem with any of the races. I have more of a problem with the fact that all the races except humans are played the same way. Dwarves are all grumpy, elves are haughty and so forth.

I think it is possible to play a non human and tweak it a little. Look at the sterotype and change one thing and now you have a different view of a dwarf or a halfling.

I don't know why DnD thinks it needed a halfling/dwarf hybrid: the gnome. I think it's a pretty useless race, and 3.5 made it even LESS appealing with bard preferred class. Now we have singing halfling hybrids wearing pretty silks.
