Humans by far most frequently. Elf, Dwarf, and Halfling compete for the second slot. Have NEVER EVER played a gnome and I probably never will. Noone I know has ever played a gnome, nor have they ever been tempted to. And that goes all the way back to 1E.

Outside of the standard races I doubt that I've ever played more than one or two. No Drow or other underdark race, no sub-race of STANDARD elf or dwarf. I think I may have played a half-elf or two but not for a long, long time.

Monster races I think I played a werewolf once in a one-off game of Monsterquest. No vampires though. Had a witch that was once polymorphed into a goblin for a brief but VERY memorable few hours. Don't remember ever playing a half-orc or orc though I suppose I could in the future.

Very limited selection of races that I've EVER played as a player, but have yet to feel highly compelled for any reason to go outside of the standard races for a character concept. Oh, I have a few ideas, but I'm saving them all for special future games when I can really devote time and effort to them for the long haul.

I voted Half-elf that way I don't get the cool bonus' elf or humans get.... wait maybe I shouldn't like half-elves so much....

It has been over a year since I got to play rather than DM, but... Human, all four games that I have gotten to play since 3.X came out.

The Auld Grump

I cannot beleive how many races there are available to PCs. I'm starting a campaign soon, I'm really going to have to lay down the law. :)

I should have voted 'DM' since I've been doing that for 3 years now and not playing, unless you count the ubiquitous tiefling NPC (who has been there since day 1, despite originally being a bit part. They liked her and she stayed).

Tiefling. Blame Tony Di. ;)

Since I DM about 85% of the time, I've only had a total of 5 characters over the years; two human rangers (different worlds, same character overall), a human barbarian, a human fighter, and a very short-lived half-elf bard.

So, I usually (80% of the time, going by the current data) play a human.

It's not because of the skills/feat either: I don't like being pidgeonholed into archetypes, but I find most of the 'non-archetypical' concepts for non-humans that I've seen over the years to be unsatisfactory for me as a player. For example, I just can't get into being a dwarven wizard, or a half-orc rogue, or whatever else I think up.

So, that's why I play humans. I'd play more half-elves, but they're just too...effectiveness challenged, if you get my meaning.

i voted dm, but the few times i get to play it's usually elf or half-elf.

i don't get playing humans. you're one IRL, why not be something else? :)
