What should a 3rd level wizard buy with 250K+ gold?

Why is everyone suggesting an Intelligence-booster instead of a Charisma-booster?

The PC is a Warmage/Wizard. I expect the spells it will throw around that are save-based will be mostly warmage spells...

Anything official WOTC D&D is open (that means books, magazines and anything on the website).

This was a mistake - but one you can take advantage of!

You'll want a magic item on page 42 of the Miniatures Handbook by WotC called a Belt of Magnificence. It gives either +2 (25,000 gp), +4 (100,000 gp), or +6 (200,000 gp) to *all* six ability scores.

Hiya all. This is my first post...ever and I just created this account so I could respond.

I'm in this game so all your answers are relevant to me. I'm also the one who suggested that we not use all 2 million gold. Mostly because I thought we'd either go too overboard or that we'd need the gold later. Ok, so 250k is already overboard for 4th level characters... but it's better than 500k!

A couple of points to mention:
1- If we don't succeed all magic will end, everywhere and permanently! The DM's setting is the PRIME Prime material plane, "the heart of the multi-verse", a home brew world.
2- We've been in this world setting before and we ALWAYS end up in non-level-appropriate situations. So often in fact that it's a standing joke. (the DM was nearly banded from ever running again)
3- Along with FoxWander's Wizard/Warmage we have Me, a Swordsage/Cleric and a Dread Necromancer (who claims to be neutral). Once a day I get the HP of a 20th lvl fighter and the Necromancer can animate the dead of an entire port town. (he's still neutral).

Now onto some of the previous posts:
-The Robe of the Archmagi is less effective than a Mithral Chain shirt with similar enchantments for a Warmage.
-The money we found was in a chest... inside a home brew magical box with an extra-dimensional space that measures 250' square! We can build a 10 story luxury tower inside that badboy and still have room to spare. Just add a bottle of air and we're set. So a Daern's Instant Fortress seems less useful as you need enough space to open it up. My alternative was a rope with a 10 hour "rope trick" enchantment on it. (usable 1/day to keep the cost down) for only 7,000gp. Of course we don't want to go opening up the magical box while in it.
-"Hire Paladins": I'm afraid they might take exception to the Dread Necro.
-Ring of Wishes... from my experiences, wishes never solved anything. They just cause more troubles. I don't think the DM will let us get a ring of wishes anyway. A good try though.
-Iron Golem: FoxWander once showed me a golem or construct that looks like a suit of armor but it's attack has a 12-20 crit range. I don't remember what it was called, or what book it was from but it would get my vote for a possible body guard.

Thanks for letting me rant and keep the ideas coming. You guys are great! :D

Hire spies and oracles: find out or at least get clues about what the DM is going to throw at you when you've got that much cash.

Make your spending decisions based on reconnaissance, not uneducated expectations.

Your own dungeon is more defensible than a castle. If you need a bolthole, dig it, don't build it.

Stash a clone of yourself in a safe place, with a trigger that frees your "backup" if you die.

Stash some raise dead and resurrection scrolls in a place you can get to from anywhere.

Set up magical transportations for yourself.

Bury some cash and backup equipment where you can find it or summon it.

Protect yourself from scrying, because someone's watching you. Guaranteed, if I were the DM.

Further to my last...

Analyze the DM, too. If this is just a stupid "gear yourself up to see how well you can allocate cash" exercise, then just buy stuff and steel yourself for a disappointing evening.

If, on the other hand, you might be facing something serious, like a cabal of wizards or a mix of different threats hitting you or threatening communities, then give it more thought.

Well, if I were to hazard a guess as to the reason we were given the gold... I'd have to say it was because the DM has poor split-second decision making skills. We got the chest doing something unexpected and he blurted out "200,000 platinum pieces" before he thought things through.

And about my first post: I remembered what the construct was called... it's a NimbleWright from the MM2.

I strongly reccomend every party member wear a Amulet of Proof against Detection and Location and pay the doubled cost for a non slotted hat of disguise. Now. That much money missing will be noticed. Be ready for the entire campaign to center on people who want your money.
