What spells do you get tired of seeing wizard players take? Cliche's, etc.

I'm just saying I'm tired of people playing carbon copy PCs of any type. <<snip>>

Consider yourself lucky. I'd love to see archtypes played, if only to avoid the archtypical player CHARGE!! mentality.

I don't consider myself lucky- every session, I get to witness 2 players in a 10(+) year PC rut.

Its like watching an actor play the same role over and over again- not within a franchise (like the Bond movies or the Dr. Who series), but in unrelated movie or show after another...but worse.

Heck- it would be worth the price of admission just to see them try playing each other's PCs.

I'm still waiting to see someone use spells out of Spell Compendium...

Well that, Complete Book of Eldritch Might OR even just Eldritch Sorcery.

I love those books. :D

I say drop every spell system out there in D&D, switch to either a psioncs-like system (or make all spellcasters spontaneous casters) or Elements of Magic: Mythic Earth. Regarding the latter, if the PC's can make and tweak their own spells, there wouldn't need to be a bajillion supplements to add to an already ridiculously large spell list...

Player: "I want a spell that works like rope trick."
DM: "Ok, you'll need x amount of Movement mods and y amount of General mods. Your effective DC to cast the spell is (quick math) 24. Give 'er."

My point exactly. A DM is forced to come up with new material, but the players aren't?

DM: "How about we play keep on the borderlands again kids."
PLAYER: "Oh, DM! Why? We've played it twice and my wizard died both times! "

Anyways, I still think that serious players should look at trying out some NEW spells...

Fireball? That underpowered bit of showmanship? It's hardly worth it.

Magic missile is not bad for finishing things off when you absolutely can't afford to waste your action, and it doesn't cost much, but fireball is for kids and grey haired guys still playing 1st edition.

Hey! Going bald, but no grey hairs here!!!

In my current group, we have a guy who plays Wizards 85% of the time (over 20 years of gaming with him), all with spell lists that are basically identical, and another guy who plays a Ranger (or as close as he can get it) in every RPG I've ever played with him.

This is:

1) Boring to watch.

2) Generally prevents someone else from trying out those archetypes.

If you are the DM mix things up abit. Tell everyone that nobody can play a PHB class and that they have to use classes from any of the complete series.

That'll change the play.

Now THAT would make the DM's job easier! It's so much easier to create games when the PC's have some character background (I think it's harder to design for FIGHTERS who "my parents died when I was little and I was raised by my brother and his elfth "friend.")

Same goes for wizards that ALWAYS take the same 5 fracking spells!
