Have them gain a level. Really, it's a good hook for bringing 'em back. It's a rush, it's a reward, it's a power trip, and it's surprisingly addictive.

HA! THAT is a great tip! I know players that play just for that thrill of levelling (its better than killing monsters or even getting loot). Its especially a big thrill in computer adventure games.
