What to do in a war...help :)

Hey all!

Alright, my party is in a little situation at the moment and I would like some mabey Spell Help.
Here is the summary:
4 Players all LVL 17
1 Cleric LVL 17 (Domains Luck and Trickery)
1 Wizard 17 (presitged some so has more access...don't know what though)
1 Ninja/Rogue/Assasin style character
1 Kick ass Fighter anti-magic type guy

I'm the cleric btw :)

I'm pretty ok with spells (no more 8th levels but the rest is pretty good). The mage is pretty much out of ammo..everything left is non-confrontational.

Basically the situation is as follows:
We are defending a Fort that is greatly outnumbered. The attackers are mostly Shades (hordes of them) and other types of monsters aswell. The head BBEG is very powerful and we probably can't beat him.
So right now, there is a river stopping the army from passing. Which ofcourse they have made some huge Fjords that they are about to cross. The have lowered the water also. Now we have to find a way to delay them until the rest of the army gets here (ofcourse :) ). One way is to break the Dam but how? My spells are mostly one-to-one types so it won't make a difference on the scale.

the things we have thought of are the following to slow them down for Spells:
a Widened Forbiddance (ouch lots of $$$ though)
Control Water (to raise the water and flood the place)
Widened Illusionary pit (using Miracle and a rod of Greater metamagic widening)
widened Earthquake (again using miracle).

So since I have Access to Miracle, and therefore almost any spell (I don't want to spend the 5000 XP)...what do you guys recommend. I have a 2 Hour time span that I have to slow them down (in game, not real time..) Any ideas? Strategies? Miracle Spells? Similar Miracles that would not Change the tide of battle, but would slow it down?

any help would be appreciated :)

thanks!

It is not entirely clear what is going on. However, a forbiddance should deal significant damage to incoming enemies (undead are not noted for having high hit points - do you mean shadows when you say shades?).

The wizard should destroy the bridges with long-range spells if you are certain that your best course of action is to keep the army on the other side of the river. A wall of fire or similar effect can then be made to divide the enemy forces, and you can send the team into action against one portion while the wizard concentrates on maintaining the wall.

....and what gaming books do you have access to? Complete series, Spell Compendium, Camapign books, etc......??

I'd think Greater Planar Ally would be the choice of the day. There must be a handy 18 HD outsider with just the ability you need. If nothing else, a planetar casts as another 17th-level cleric. You'll double your own power with one spell.

First off,

Thanks for the replies :)

Alirght to update:
I have access to 1 miracle only :( at the moment.

As for my Wizard, he really doesn't have many spells left so he is pretty much out of the picture. Although I can make a Wall of Fire Widened (with rod) with my miracle. Shame to do it that way though no?

we have to find a way to hold off the army for 2 hours, so also, I need something that would either seriously slow them down. A forbidance is a good idea, put also comes at quite a price... if its the only thing, then thats what i'll do ofcourse :)

As for the books I have access to. There isn't much limit there, SC, complete books, tome and blood, oriental adventures etc.. there is not much that I don't have access to. If its in a hard cover, I can usually use it.

As for Greater planar ally...thats a good thought! I don't remember exactly what it does however I will look it up when I get home :)

Thanks for the replies so far!
