I just finished Detroit: Become Human and I've got some mixed feelings. I didn't know the gameplay consisted entirely of quick-time events making the game feel more like an interactive novel than a game.

Finished Final Fantasy VII Remake, now trying out Monster Hunter Stories. I also have bought a lot of the Final Fantasy mainline games on sale, and haven't played them before, so this year is gonna be full of JRPGs for me.

I finished Avowed last weekend. As a game on the arcade-y side of RPGs it was pretty good, if rather shallow. I never felt any great connection to my companions as I would in, say, Mass Effect or Baldur's Gate 3. It's also, similarly to Skyrim or Cyberpunk 2077, a game in which I found my preferred style and loadout for combat pretty early on, and would struggle not to go back to it on any subsequent playthrough, limiting replayability.

Not really sure what I'll go with next.

I've just finished Bloodborne (almost exactly ten years after its release, though I've only been playing it for about a year or so? Bounced off Central Yharnam twice and didn't really settle into a workable groove with it until after I had finished Elden Ring). I was pretty overleveled for NG by the end of the run and did Orphan of Kos and Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen before Gerhman and the Moon Presence, which made the the last two feel anticlimatic. Still -- fantastic game, well worth the wait, enjoyed it tremendously.

Bloodborne is a wonderful game, though that initial stretch before you can start leveling up can be brutal. The soundtrack is one of my favorites. If the Cleric Beast theme doesn't get you hyped to hunt some monsters, nothing will:

I missed a lot of the music because my setup isn't conducive to playing with the sound on. What I did hear though, I thought was great.

As far as Central Yharnam, I went through it all in about an hour from waking up in Iosefka's Clinic to lighting the lantern at Odeon Chapel yesterday morning. I'm not usually a NG+ guy, but that was a blast.

I find this with a lot of games. I would say Avowed at least has 3 fairly distinct playstyles, but I definitely get the feeling.

I'm currently playing Elden Ring (again, having finished it when it came out), and I basically ended up making a character nearly identical to the first one I played in play-style, just better-optimized! I'd really like to try playing a character who was "Unga-Bunga" (i.e. big hard-hitting weapons STR-based) or Sorcery-centric, or heavy on the parrying and maybe DEX-based, but I just keep going back to that Faith/Invocations/Sword+Board build. It's very easy and comfortable for me to play and I seem to be even better at it than when I last played!

Obligatory screenshot of my current character.

I got quite a long way into Elden Ring, but never finished it. Sorcery was my build, never could really get into melee type characters. I got on okay with it until eventually I reached a boss that would reliably one-shot me if it landed a hit, and I just couldn't find a solution for getting past them without taking that hit.
