What videogames are you playing in 2026?

Wow. I did not expect that.

Basically, I'm just really frustrated with the game. I've spent WAY too much time trying to find stuff. A door in the goblin/ruined town that leads down into the necromancer's lair took me quitting the game and looking it up on Reddit.
The game isn't intended that you find everything, or even most things, in a single playthrough. You don't need to find the necromancers lair, it's a minor sidequest, and there are at least two other ways to get there anyway. You can climb down the well or get there through the caves (I think there are two other ways into the spider caves, possibly more). That there isn't a single railroad track through the game is what people like.
Followed by a talking door that you basically have to edge your characters forward without mousing over the door to get past it once you've unlocked it.
Are you playing on a Steamdeck or other tiny screen?

Other stuff too - the high mountain road that I could not figure out how to walk down for the life of me. Basically three really frustating things right in a row has sucked all the joy of the game out of me.

Plus, FFS, let me zoom the freaking camera out some more so I can actually SEE the game. I could not give two craps about roofs and leaves.
Yeah, the illusory door in the hag's lair was seriously frustrating in my first playthrough. There's no indication that you need to not interact with it to get past it, and it takes up so much of the screen that just finding some place beyond it to click isn't at all intuitive.
 


Hehe, the first time I played BG 3, I missed the entire underdark part of Act 1. That's lots of quests, XPs, NPCs and stories to be ignored, but still managed to get to the end. So yeah, you can miss a lot of stuff, but it's okay.
The things that I liked about BG 3 was:
  • The characters and their stories/adventures
  • The stuff you could do, and that they accounted for. Like putting the right items in the right spot to trigger an effect.
  • Many ways to solve parts of the adventure, making allies, fighting, finding alternate routes.
 

I've restarted BG3, decided to go with a Durge Elemental Monk using a mod that updates the class to the 2024 rules (among a few other mods). So far so good. I've just gotten Karlach and I'm about to go and track down the missing Druid. I'm having a lot of fun running up and smacking enemies with my fists and kicks. Need to get better and stealthing and strategy though.

Was playing on my laptop - so, 15 inch screen. Not very big, but, not tiny either. And, considering there is a shopping list of Reddit posts on exactly this issue, I'm thinking this isn't just me. Like I said, I'm certainly not a completist by any stretch. I'm just doing pretty standard things that the game is straight up telling me to do - find the door to go to under the town is a big clue right in the first building I walked into.

LIke I said, this sort of pixel bitching stuff just sucks all the joy of any game right out the window for me. I have zero patience for it. As in none. Same in table top to be honest. I've literally suicided my PC rather than fart around trying to get past the DM's latest pointless roadblock.

That's a fairly common bug with doors in general in that game. One that they've attempted to fix through multiple patches but still haven't completely solved. It is what it is at this point. Usually quitting and restarting the game works.

One thing the game teaches you is you don’t have to do everything you are told. What is it your character wants to do? If you aren’t a necromancer yourself you probably aren’t that interested in finding some necromancers lab when you have a far more pressing tadpole problem. That’s the sort of thing that sets it apart from other RPGs that do just tell you where to go and what to do, and the reason for its success.

To me, that's even worse. "Hey, here's a bunch of plot hooks, but, don't actually follow up on them because they're not all that important." :erm: You are really not selling this to me.

"Hey, I want to like this game, but, game play is really frustrating." "Oh, that's okay. It's supposed to be frustrating and pointless" is hardly a strong selling point. Like I said, I loved BG 1 and 2. But, I'm just bouncing so hard off of 3 and I WANT to like this game based on how much I enjoyed the first two.

Sure, I'm merely pointing out why other people like it. If you prefer a more directed game it's not for you. Structurally it's more like DOS2 (and arguably Witcher 3) than the previous BG games. Pillars of Eternity and the Owlcat Pathfinder games are structured more like the original BG games. And Solasta is like IWD with worse writing.
