What was CAR WARS?

Several members of our Chapter (Car Wars slang for a gaming group for those playing the home game of this thread) have tried out the new edition, but they have all been cranky about the lack of a design system.

And yes, as I said in my earlier post, it certainly makes the game a lot more expensive to buy into.

Got you beat, Diaglo (for once).

I'll bring the old plastic bag edition of Car Wars. Although I don't have any of the others in plastic bag editions... I have Sunday Drivers and Truck Stop in the pocketbox editions.

my bag gave out before i even bought Sunday Driver and Truck Stop.

don't quote me on this, but i think i still have everything. i just moved it all over to the pocketboxes. they are still holding up strong.

Bolen - no, from what I have been told, it has seen some major revisions rules-wise.

Diaglo - Yeah, the pocketboxes were TOUGH. One of my pocketboxes had the hinges wear out on it, but th eothers are in fine shape indeed.

Hound we should get together at GenCon with some of the other guys and get a game of CarWars going.... :)

If you do, I gotta come see it. Car Wars is one of those games I always wanted to play, but never got a chance to.

I enjoyed it also and subscribed to ADA also, it was a long time ago. I used to work at a game store so I got all the CW goodies back then, and I agree making your own car was the true fun of the game because most did not last very long.

One of my most memorable Convention experiences involved Car Wars. Gen Con 17. i wasn't registered for this game, but a buddy of mine was. so we went to watch.

two GMs with a screen/curtain in between. two opposing teams. action took place in a parking deck. one team started at the basement, the other on the roof.

my buddy's car was light on armor with a mod power plant. more of a scout vehicle really. a single front mounted weapon.

anyway. his team moves out somewhat together. as they round a corner the other team's scout comes barreling around. my buddy gets in a luck shot and disables the vehicle. from behind the screen we hear a roar.

"I'm not dead yet, you ugly dog :) :) :) :) er"

my buddy is a small guy. he jumps about a foot off his seat. the screen parts and this bear of a guy growls.

my buddy ducks under the table. he looks to me and another friend. we both turn and look at the guy standing behind us.:p

Car Wars rocks! I can still remember the first time I saw it in a store. I have just a ton of stuff for it still; just something very appealing about cars with guns. About two years ago I tracked down a store selling Car Wars stuff and picked up the few things I was still missing.

The most exciting thing I remember doing was a real life 540 degree spin on the way to play the game. Ah, winter roads.

They are planning on vehicle design rules for the new version of Car Wars but I don't think that they are out yet.

IIRC the polyhedal d20 mini-game a few issues back (it was sort of a cross-country race theme a la CannonBall Run or any of those other cheesy 1970s race movies) had a lot of vehicle combat rules and weapons a la Car Wars.

I have all of the Pocket Boxes I beleive.. Car Wars, Truck Stop, Sunday Drivers & Boat Wars... along with all the Atlases, the Uncle Als Catalogues, ADQs etc etc etc... I'll stop now hehehe, though truth be told a few of the plastic boxes have now been used for other uses, storing little dice, 15mm miniatures etc just because they were so sturdy.....
