That was almost 20 years ago....

The first monster encounter I remember was with an ogre. We were playing Basic D&D (the red box) and I was an elf, and my one spell was Charm Person. I had 4-5 ogres following me around at any given time. It was great.

Oh my god, that was like, at least 20 years ago for me. I'm glad you made the poll multiple choice, because I don't think I could remember exactly which one!

I'm pretty sure though that the first module I played was Keep on the Borderlands, so my first "kill" was probably an unfortunate member of one of the various humanoid monster tribes that infested the caves. :D

Carrion Crawler
Red box Basic set killed with my nameless Cleric and his Bullywug allies (I had 2 plastic toy bullywugs and a Carrion crawler)

Carrion Crawler...you know, the one waiting in the pit in the first adventure in the Dungeon Master's Book in the Red Box, on the way to the old castle? That one. :D

My first character was Morri Gunnarson, a dwarven fighter/thief. During the travel to the ruined keep we went to explore, we were ambushed by a group of three gnolls. I remember hurling my hand axe at one, then finishing him off with a warhammer blow to the head. So a gnoll would be my first confirmed kill.

Skeletons, man! In a homebrew campaign. Well sort of...

I was the main DM for our group but when the DMG (AD&D) came out another guy wanted to DM. The point of this is to tell about who I could have killed in that campaign:

Me: I listen at the door

New DM: (Rolls) You hear wild loud music...you've never heard this kind of music before.

Me: I bash open the door

New DM: (Rolls) Okay you open the door.

Me: What do I see?

New DM: You're in a huge room...looks like a banquet hall with a stage. There are four guys playing weird instruments and making a lot of noise.

Me: I check out the guys on stage

New DM: You see Led Zeppelin...

I could have killed Robert Plant!

Man, the 70's were weird

I think it was a goblin or 2.
Possibly a skeleton.
I remember my cleric friend turning some ghouls, but then she was killed by the chaotic wizard Bargle.
Then there was that rust monster who ruined my best stuff.
Eventually Bargle charmed me.

Bugbear

My buddy Joel (who introduced me to the game) was running me through his brother's homebrewed Dungeon, Bugbear Castle...created because he had 12 Bugbear figs:)

i believe it was a goblin, however i didnt so much kill him as incapacitate him only to have him die of his injuries whilst i was interrogating him ~ my paladin didnt speak goblin, and the DM didnt know if goblins spoke Common, i think he just expecting me to kill the goblin and take its stuff, rather than try and find out where i was.. (i had woken up in a cell in a dungeon with no knowledge how i got there)
