What Will D&D4 Mean to the Enworld Boards?

Well, I would hope that [the people of] EnWorld is big enough to allow conet of both editions to be discussed and civil enough to allow mature conversations without igniting edition wars.
Keep to the code!

Edit: OK, now I'm done with the Pirates metaphor.

Morrus has been looking forward to do a new D&D edition news page like Eric used to, so yeah, this will be a 4E MB. Of course, no one's going to stop anyone from talking 3E or any other edition or game, for that matter (unless they're really snarky and rude *ahem*).

Will this stay true? Or will it become a 4e board?

What I guess I'd like to see it become is a general D&D/fantasy RPG board, covering all editions of D&D from OD&D to 4e, with related fantasy RPGs fair game as well.

We cover the things folks want to talk about. The place grew up around 3e rumors, and 3e is currently the most played tabletop RPG, so it does get most of the traffic. But we do get folks talking about older editions of D&D, and other d20 games, and even non-d20 games...

As we go forward, we sure will be talking about 4e. But we are going to do our best to make sure that there continues to be a place for folks to talk about other things too. And we'll try to break discussions out into forums that make sense, so the heavy-traffic stuff doesn't overwhelm less popular stuff, without sticking anything off into a corner nobody ever visits.

Will the future EnWorld be a good place for me? If not, any tips for where I should be hanging out are appreciated.

With the new edition, we will be changing to meet demands. I do sincerely hope you find this place to your liking.

ENWorld is a d20 board, and more specifically than that, a D&D board. Hell, it grew out of Eric Noah's 3rd edition rumor site.

The only reason it appears to be a 3e board is because it's a D&D board, and D&D is 3e to the vast majority of people. Hell, see how quickly 4e became the topic du jour when it was announced? That is of course going to lighten up a bit as it becomes less "news flashy" and I predict 3e will once again reclaim the majority of conversation, but when 4th edition approaches it will just naturally shift towards and become 4e dominant because that's what the people who visit the boards will do.

Which isn't to say that there will be no place for 3e, anymore than claiming that there's no place for older editions right now.

I hope that EN World won't become the Dragonsfoot of Third Edition, at least as much because I'd hate for so many people here to become so bitter about Fourth Edition as because I'd like to still come to EN World for my D&D conversations if I play the new game.

QFT.

We embrace D&D. D&D is going to be 4th edition. You'll be able to talk about and discuss third edition here, of course, but I expect that it'll be a lot like the change from 3e to 3.5 -- only a lot more exciting.

I don't play 3E, never have, but I can usually find as much or more stuff to talk about here as at the other, grognardier sites. There's a fair amount of traffic with the "1E/2E/OD&D" tag, plus most topics on the general board are edition-neutral enough that I can usually manage to participate if I want to (to the point that I occasionally forget and make 1E/OD&D-specific rules references which confuse or annoy folks). The only section I really avoid is the Rules forum. I imagine it'll remain pretty much the same as the game transitions to 4E -- there'll be a lot of specific 4E-rules talk that won't hold any interest for me, but I'm sure there will still be plenty of edition-neutral and old edition talk as well. If anything, 4E looks to be going in an old-edition-friendlier direction than 3E; not in its specific rules, but in its apparent focus on the dynamics of actual play over theoretical number-crunching and character over gear.

Yeah, well here's something that most of you don't realize...

Morrus (and Michael Morris) have secretly been working on EN World 2.0.

I hear the new version of EN World is going to make EN World 1.0 obsolete. They are going to MAKE you switch to 2.0. When asked about 2.0, they keep giving vague denials like "oh, I've been busy so I haven't had time to work on it" and what not. But mark my words, they ARE working on it and once they switch there will be NO SUPPORT for 1.0.

I also hear they're making it "all Digital" and you'll need a computer to use it. :D

And it won't work on MacOS, Linux and old Windows* :D

* Yes, I'm a bit bitter about the D&D Insider compatibility :(
