D&D 4E What would make you decide against 4e?

I won't switch if they're overcompensating in their desire to reduce complexities. I also won't switch if they're breaking as many things as they're fixing.

Unfortunately, I also won't be able to switch if no German translation of the books is available. In any case it will take quite a bit of effort on my part to convince my players that switching will be a good idea.
Have you listened to that. I know, some facts are off - he speculated that the PHB would be released in February 08, the German edition July 08. I guess that will be postponed a bit.

But he has said "about 4 months of delay".

Cheers, LT.

I will play at least a mini-campaign, but will drop it if:

1. My group does not find it as rewarding to play as the current edition.

2. It is tougher to prep original adventures for.

3. I get the sense I am getting less than the whole game by not subscribing to DDI. I know their promises on this count, but I also know they expect to make a lot of their cash with this model.

I'm pretty optimistic overall.

Ah, I hadn't seen (or rather heard) that yet. Very informative. Thanks for the link! :)

The early news from the upcoming Races book has me close as I've ever been to deciding against 4E. I could've adapted my current campaigns even with 4E's drastic rules changes but the races are a sticking point for me now. I don't feel I have the will to deny or allow my players to use races as presented in that book for our long established game. Likewise I don't have the will to start a new campaign just for the explicit reason to try out 4E's new concepts. The only thing that could turn my mood around is if I stopped reading D&D forums, D&DI and designer blogs altogether. :P

Same. I'm not a fan of a scaly race in the core book. In no way will a playable scaly race exist in any "classical" setting I run. None. It's just not the medieval fantasy world I envision (or want to play in). Tieflings are borderline but this Dragonborn nonsense I really don't like.

I'm also not digging a lot of the ability names either but I'll at least reserve judgment on those for the time being.

So will I at least check out the 4E books - absolutely. But I really don't want to have to chop out sections of the core book for fluff reasons. Core should mean generic. WotC seems to be moving away from this concept significantly.

Just about everything I've heard about 4th edition, both fluff and crunch, convinces me I won't want to DM it. I'm currently DMing C&C, and am very happy with the way the game runs.

I'll probably pick up a PHB, just so I could play in a 4th edition game (if I can't find a C&C or 1st edition game).

When 4E was announced, I initally was enthusiast and hopeful.

As time goes on and more and more info comes out, I am experiencing a growing sense of ill ease. Celebrin and broghammerj have summed up alot of my misgivings towards the new edition.

Dammit, I so much want to like 4E - but as more and more info comes out, I am not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling about the new edition.

Of course, the information coming out is in pieces and lacks context to give me enough information to see how the new edition works so the jury is still out. I will give 4E a good look over before I make a final decision but not much coming out in bits and snatches so far is 'winning the hearts and minds' of myself.

Color me jaded for the time being.
