D&D 5E What would you play?

However, that shouldn't be the only or even the primary consideration IMO. What do you enjoy playing? Myself, given a choice between rogue, monk, or paladin, I would go with rogue. But that's me. I like sneaky, tricky characters with good social skills.

I picked these three classes because they simultaneously fill a missing party role and are something I'm interested in playing. The problem is choosing which to play.

Should have played a dwarven wizard.

11 (Dex)
11 (Wis)
17 (Con) (19)
9 (Cha)
14 (Str) (16)
17 (Int)

Using a Mountain Dwarf and Heavy Armour Mastery, you are all set to keep concentration.

I would go with monk - i mean you can pluck arrows and junk out of the air, who doesnt want that! ! Plus you can be stealthy, face, trap guy whatever.

Based on what I have seen from 2 monks in our party so far, I would say a half-elf monk. Other posters have already made some good arguments for this choice. I think the archetype you should choose is another discussion all by itself.

I think, after much consideration, I'll go with a monk. I already know that paladins and rogues are pretty amazing in 5e, so I think I'll give the monk a try and see how well it holds up compared to its 3.5/Pathfinder cousins.

So now the question is: what type of monk should I play? And what race? Since I start at 6th level, I'll have an ASI available. Would a feat be more beneficial than increasing a stat?

Given that Monks aren't big on the armor or shield stuff, nor polearms, I suspect not--most of the best feats belong to those categories, or at least the feats everyone raves about. With two 17s, you're delightfully close to capped stats, and could actually max one out if you play a race that gets an appropriate +2.

As for type of monk, your stated party and interests suggest either Open Hand or Shadow.

Open Hand has self-healing (useful when you're the only one who wants to get anywhere near enemies), some crowd-control effects, and eventually gets Quivering Palm which really messes enemies up.

Shadow has stealth, the amazing shadowy teleportation, and if you exploit your shadow effects enough, can become Invisible on a regular basis. It wouldn't perfectly synergize with your party (you have humans, and might wish to play a human, and a Light cleric means bright lights!) but it would help mitigate the "I'm the only melee guy" aspect.

In fact, instead of listening to me, just hit up this guide I found. It'll be faster that way, and you can make your own decisions.

Half Elves get +1 to 2 ability scores and +2 to CHA, which is higher than any other race other than Human at +1 to all stats.
Oh and ANY 2 skill proficiencies of your choice plus Darkvision and Fey Ancestry.

With your rolls and your ABI you can have a maxed out stat now
Assuming you go Monk
17 (DEX) + 1 (race) + 2 (ABI) = 20
17 (WIS) + 1 (race) = 18
14 (CON)
11 (CHA) + 2 (race) = 13
11 (INT)
9 (STR) Monks don't really need this anyway

Or switch CHA with STR if you want your low stats to be all 11's

But with this, you have max DEX,high WIS and very decent CON
AC of 19 with no armor, high DEX and WIS proficiencies
Also high damage mod due to Martial Arts

From here, I'd go either Open Hand or Shadow, though Shadow might be fun given Darkvision :p
