What's a good magic item for 10 grand or less?

I know it's a one shot but potion of alter self is great oneshot- can duplicate many other effects- gills for water breathing wings for flying disguises etc.

And it's not allowed per the rules. You can't make potions out of personal spells.

How about death ward on your armor? A blessed scabbard?

If you're going for Coolness factor, I'd suggest tossing down 1,000 gp on a slotless, use-activated item of Prestidigitation at will. It flavors food, creates music, moves small objects, creates utensils, and you can even use it to give all of your attacks a red glow or a cool "swoosh" sound. Greatest inconsequential item you'll ever buy.

If it's slotless and use-activated, you're looking at 2,000gp.

If it's slotless and command-activated (which seems to be the better choice for what you want to accomplish), it's 1,800gp.

EDIT:

Otherwise, yes, it's an amazingly cool object. :D

There's a dagger of shadow in Relics of ritual II, IIRC it's just a +1 dagger but when you strike and deal damage you disappear... neat.

Buy yourself a load of Tree feather tokens. Amazingly useful in a multitude of situations, and your ranger can plant himself a forest anytime he wants.

Immovable rods are also great fun for a relatively low cost.

I'm playing in a low magic game, and we're finally going to have a chance to buy some things. I have about 10,000 gold, what's a good item for a ranger/nentyar hunter?

I should add, almost any D20 fantasy source will do, as long as I can provide the dm with stats.

Also, the cool factor means more to me than the power factor.

Wow. Thanks for all the feedback. Where to start?

Ranger styles. We still use the 3.0 ranger, so no ranger styles. I use a two handed sword. I don't need a weapon, I have a nasty little +5 shocking burst greatsword that I pulled from a deck of many things. Other than that, I don't have much, considering I'm 10th level. Yeah, I know, the sword should be enough, right? Well, maybe I'm just greedy. :-)

I have a +1 rop, ring of climbing, +2 robe of protection (really important, since I also drew -1 to all sves from the deck - twice!), the aforementioned travel cloak, +1 chain shirt, wand of clw, boots of landing from R&R, eyes of the eagle. Oh, and we all just got amulets of thought projection for the mission we are on, but I believe we are supposed to return those.

I travel light, so I really don't need a haversack, and as rare as gold is in this game, I'd really rather not spend it on one shot items. We are allowed to upgrade items like cloak of resistance, ring of protection, etc, so I don't need to buy a new one, but I don't have time right now to wait on custom made stuff. I suppose I could always grab gauntlets of ogre power or some other stat boosting item, but, as I said, I prefer the cooler stuff. The travel cloak is indeed cool.

You had the use of a minor artifact and you have a +7 equivalent sword, as well as several smaller magic items (2 rings, a robe, a cloak, armor, a wand, a pair of boots, a set of eyes, and an amulet: 7 out of 11 slots filled, 8 if you count the doubling up you've done on the robe and armor) and you're playing in a low magic game? What do you consider a high magic game?

Not counting the sword, I'm way below 10th level for magic item purposes. And I paid for the damn sword by gaining -2 to all saves from the same deck I yanked the sword from. Oh, the amulet of thought projection. Nix that. That should reaad amulet of thought PROTECTION.

So, that leaves me 34,975 gold short of what I should have for my level. That is, as I said, not counting the sword. The rest of the group wasn't lucky enough to get a +7 sword from the deck, so they are similarly low on gold/magic. We have about HALF of the dmg guidelines. I'd call that low magic enough.

Sigh. the rest of the party is at least as poor, so that would make,- let's see 35k x 6= 210,,000 short. Adding in a sword that only one character can use does not bring us up to snuff. I'm not complaining, I just don't see how that can be called high magic.
