What's a good magic item for 10 grand or less?

Two other items that wind up being very useful from Miniatures Handbook:

Field Provisions Box: 2000gp, provides food for 15 medium humanoids or 5 horses once/day.

Magic Sleeping Bag: 1000gp, provides a nice restful night of sleep, in addition to Endure Elements, and you regain 1 hp/level for the night of rest, in addition to normal healing.

The former means you never have to worry about food for your party ever again. The latter is just nice, though a Travel Cloak is a bit more usable...since it keeps you dry in the rain, no matter what.

I hate stuff like this. On the one hand, the reason it exists is simply to make book-keeping and other boring aspects of the game disappear into the background. (That part I'm down with, though I think there are better ways of achieving the same ends. As one quick example, standardized use of the Survival skill for foraging.) It isn't "unbalanced" or game-breaking. The downside is that it makes it largely impossible to present a world in which there is widespread hunger, famine, or want.

Yes, D&D is only quasi-medieval, and yes, close examination and extrapolation of the fantasy elements of the game makes sticking to a medieval feel difficult, regardless, but "close examination" and "in your face and impossible to ignore" are hugely different when it comes to willing suspension of disbelief.

(Obviously, if one's idea of D&D doesn't include quasi-medieval elements such as widespread hunger, this won't be an issue.)

On the other hand, how many villages, cities, or towns have spare cash in the amount of 2,000gp / 15 people?

Well, I see it both ways.

At 2K, that is 3.5 silver a day for a year. Or a common meal a day for a year to never pay for food ever again.

OTOH, my world doesn't have mages willing to crank out 10,000's of these to feed everybody. So sure, it would be a great investment if someone can afford it, but it could not be a solution.

What kind of food is it? Would you want to spend the money, or even just get it for free, if you had to eat gruel 3/day, 365 day/year? I wouldn't. Of course, in a famine situation, I would, but sans famine, no sirree Bob.

Id recomend Gloves of Storing, loved the 3.0 version (2000 gp - always had them). In 3.5 it costs 10000 gp, but still is a very very good option for fighter types.
With Gloves of Storing you can always have your weapon with you, even in citys. Never have your sword stolen and its the same as having the Quickdraw feat.
And it has a extreme coolness factor with a Shocking Greatsword - which you can leave activated since the gloves put the item in a static mode.

Some Suggestions

+2 cold iron greatsword (~7000 g.p. but defeats most DR in the game)

Most DR, where'd you get that from?

If you're going with weapon material make it adamantite, (hard to sunder, nice to sunder with).

Now that you got what you wanted out of everyone, let me say that you are nuts.

NUTS I SAY!!!

You are not in a low magic game, I can attest to that. I play my characters through a normal to slightly high level magic game, but as a player, my DM is running a low level magic game, and I mean low level.

My guy is level 7, almost enough XP for 8 and the only magic I saw out of those levels from 1st til now is one healing potion that healed 8 hit points and a +1 shield. And I had to suffer to get the shield, it was non magical when I got it and I had to do a blood ritual that envolved 3 fortituide saving throws and if I failed one, I died, start over, no go to jail and wait to be raised.

Also, it is a low money game, I have 30 plat at 7th level and maybe around 100 plat for all levels, including gear that I found, minus the shield, so not even a master craft weapon until just last session.

So, next time you make a stupid claim about playing in a low magic game and whine about only having 10k to spend on an item, step back and make sure your claim is accurate. I would love to have 5k to spend on an item, heck, even 1k. You sound like and arse when you make such a claim, all you had to do was leave out that one statement from your original question and you would have been fine, but please, don't insult the rest of us who are in a low magic game.

@DM-Rocco; no need to be rude. Telling someone that they are nuts could be taken as a joke; telling them that they are making a stupid claim seems nasty. And an attitude of one-up-manship is kinda offputting.
