What's a good race/template for a shadow-shifting assassin?

Ended up using a shadow swyft (stupidest. name. ever.) with the shadow template, for a total of +3 ECL. Then 21 levels of sword sage and I have my character.

The Shadow Creature template in ToM (which I believe is the most up to date?) is LA +1 and specifically states that it grants Hide In Plain Sight (except in daylight).

Huh, no kidding. Okay. It may be worth adjusting it, since this is a replacement PC for a player whose hero recently died permanently.

The ToM template is an update to the Dark Creature template, not the Shadow Creature template. It's significantly weaker than the Shadow Creature template (MRP is in Lords of Madness) for an Epic-level character.

Yes, you are definitely getting more goodies in return for that extra +1 LA for Shadow instead of Dark. I lean more towards Dark because I tend to play characters from low levels up, but an epic character would probably do better with Shadow.

Our high level (pre-epic) campaign (currently on hiatus as that group explores 4e :/) featured two Shadow-Creature-PCs... and would've had three if I hadn't heard about the other two just before game. We started at 12th, and as of last session (some months ago) were lvl 18.
