What's been your longest break from playing RPGs?

I didn't play for about two years during which I finished my undergraduate degree. By then I was so antsy that even though it was tough, I squeezed in games during grad school.

I was afraid that when I moved here after graduation and went to work that it would be hard to find a gaming group, but it turned out that several of my co-workers were avid roleplayers, and so things took off right away.

I've gone through a couple of other brief (1-3 month) stints without a game, but always while looking for one or recovering from a "game collapse".

Hmm. About 10 years. From when 2e started to the beginning of 3e. It wasn't 2e that put me off, but there were other more interesting things for me to spend my time on so I stopped. I loved the 3e d20 system, so I came back to the game.

In my 2e days I went nearly 3 years.

In my 3e days I went roughly 1 year before I formed my own group to DM.

I took a break from around '93 to 2001, so around eight years or so. Sadly, sold off my of my old gaming stuff during that time, too.

I started playing in junior high and stopped shortly before my junior year of high school. After military service and college, I picked the hobby back up again. I would say about seven to eight years of no RPGs.

Gaps of 5 & 2 years


I played 83-86
Then 92-2002 - got rid of some stuff
now 2004 to current -once per month


I must be the only person in the whole world who didn't play in College.

I've had periods when I haven't been playing but that was due to a lack of a group...since I still read and plot during these times I don't count it as stopping...

however when I was in Junior High (about 22 years ago) I quit gaming for 6 months...and I accomplished a lot when I stopped.

Since then, I've always remember that there is a cost for my hobby in time

Hey, me too! I went from Gen Con 1986 to late 2005 - and I'm back at Gen Con right now. (I hope I can keep it going this time.)

There is only one logical conclusion. I must have briefly died sometime in the mid-80's, thus awakening my clones. :nod:

I actually took a pretty major break from gaming. It wasn't for lack of interest, but rather from lack of a group. My last game with one group was in 1990. I didn't start again until 1994, and then took a break from 1995 until 2005, when I was introduced to my current group.
