What's new this fall in sci-fi/fantasy style programing?

So, now that Buffy's done and Firefly's cancelled, John Doe is still born and the majority of the prime time slots are filled with 'reality' TV what will everyone be watching this comming TV season?

About the only shows I'm looking forward to watching again are Angel and Smallville. Beyond that I can't think of any fantasy/sci-fi shows that will be on the air. It would be nice if we could have replacements for shows like Buffy and Firefly, and to be honest I'm not really sure there isn't something in the works. I just haven't heard of it.

So, what will you be faithfully tunning in for? Are there any new shows coming out that look promising? Inquiring minds and all that...

To boldly go...

Well, hopefully, the new direction Enterprise producers are taking with the series will hopefully jump start it again. I like Enterprise, and I hate seeing it being dragged in the mud like this, so to speak.

I've been seeing some ads for this-

Jake 2.0

but the only other thing I know about it is the blurb by a fan on IMDb-

"Jack is dreaming of becoming an NSA agent. But he has not been able to get in to the program. But one day he is infected by nano probes, which increase his abilities. He gets better sight, hearing and strength. It is similar to the start of Spiderman. I enjoyed the pilot and hope that they will continue producing the show. This show is for you who like science fiction. If you like shows like Spiderman and Superman this is a show for you."

Jake 2.0 looks interesting.

Eliza Dushku has a new show called Tru Calling on Fox. It will probably die unless it is really good (and even if it is good remember it is Fox) because it is on Thursdays @ 8 which is pure acid death as it will be going head to head with Friends/Scrubs and Survivor. Anyway, the lead character can travel back in time 24 hours and that's all we know of the plot so far.

Don't forget about Alias, one of the best shows on TV. ;)

A&E is showing MI:6 right now on Tuesday nights. I haven't watched it yet but I have it sitting on the TiVo waiting for me. It's a spy show according to AICN.

The real shame right now is that Enterprise and Angel are now on at the same time which means I'm going to have to find another way to watch Enterprise unless the rerun it on Sundays.

The death of Buffy, Firefly, Farscape has left a huge genre hole. The good thing is that Joss is working on a Buffy spin-off as we speak and it may not get on the air this season but it could be ready for a mid-season replacement (highly doubtful as no production has started nor are any actors on board) or show up in fall of 2004. And Eliza may be out of a job soon so we may actually get that Faith: tVS show...

I guess there is still Stargate and it's upcoming spinoff (both of which I have never watched nor have much interest in).

Upcoming genre shows:

Fearless (WB - Tuesdays at 9:00 ET): 23-year-old agent Gaia (Rachael Leigh Cook) was born with a genetic defect - she lacks fear. Whether this is a plus or minus for her teammates at the FBI's Special Investigative Unit remains to be seen. Comment: the WB's clone of Alias and it doesn't sound interesting.

Jake 2.0 (UPN - Wednesdays at 9:00 ET): An accident changes computer whiz Jake Foley into a secret agent for the National Security Agency (NSA) by injecting nanites (tiny robots) into his body. It improves his strength, hearing, vision and reflexes, as well as giving him the ability to link with computers using only his mind. Comments: We can only hope that another super-powered hero has a place on the tube.

Joan of Arcadia (CBS - Fridays at 8:00 ET): Teen-aged Joan has begun to have conversations with God (in the guise of different person each episode), a fact she is keeping a secret from her family and the rest of the townfolk of Arcadia. Comments: In the wake of ended Touched By An Angel, CBS attempts to renovate it for younger audiences. We don't think it will fly.

Tarzan & Jane (WB - Sundays at 9:00 ET): The Tarzan tale re-tooled as an urban adventure. Comments: The classics have stayed around for a reason, but it has to be freshly depicted this time around to succeed.

Tru Calling (FOX - Thursdays at 8:00 ET): Medical intern Tru Davies (Eliza Dushku) relives the previous day to turn wrong outcomes right. Comments: Dushku (Faith-Buffy) will make this watchable and the "Groundhog Day" gimmick might work.

Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital (ABC - Thursdays at 9:00 ET): A hospital with a quirky staff and supernatural goings-on. Comments: If the staff is interesting enough, maybe (but then again, two similar series have recently failed.)

Still Life (FOX - Time slot TBA): Dead rookie cop Jake Morgan returns to narrate the goings-on in his family. Comments: Seems more like a soap than a genre series.

Wonderfalls (FOX - Mondays at 8:00 ET): Jaye Tyler has conversations with cartoon animals, animal figurines, eetc., which lead her to better others around her as well as herself. Comments: The film Amelie converted to America's small screen. If the stories take unusual twists and turns, this one could last.

Besides Angel and Smallville, I watched Charmed, Andromeda (syndicated), and SG-1 (syndicated; one season behind the cable version).

So far, I haven't heard any new shows that stand out, but when the new Fall season starts, I'll be looking for them, network and syndication in my area.

May watch it for the sole purpose of Rachel Leigh Cook.

Too bad TheWB decided to make it a midseason replacement.

Jake 2.0 (UPN - Wednesdays at 9:00 ET): An accident changes computer whiz Jake Foley into a secret agent for the National Security Agency (NSA) by injecting nanites (tiny robots) into his body. Good news: I would like to watch this show.

Bad news: UPN no longer air in Hawaii. One can hope that a local station can pick it up as a late-night syndication.

Joan of Arcadia (CBS - Fridays at 8:00 ET): Teen-aged Joan has begun to have conversations with God (in the guise of different person each episode), a fact she is keeping a secret from her family and the rest of the townfolk of Arcadia. Don't clip its wing yet. If CBS is smart enough, they should move it to Sunday. Friday night is killer on many shows.

Tarzan & Jane (WB - Sundays at 9:00 ET): The Tarzan tale re-tooled as an urban adventure. Comments: The classics have stayed around for a reason, but it has to be freshly depicted this time around to succeed.
I don't know if this will fly, except to appeal toward female audience.

Agree, but it's more of a Seven Day clone, only without the ball. But other than that, I honestly think the mainstream (and Nielsen audience) won't keep the show on, unless it can surprise me like John Doe, another good show but didn't have staying power ... Kids, let's give thanks to FOX for being so out-of-touch.

Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital (ABC - Thursdays at 9:00 ET): A hospital with a quirky staff and supernatural goings-on. Comments: If the staff is interesting enough, maybe (but then again, two similar series have recently failed.)
Didn't UPN did a similar show premise?

Still Life (FOX - Time slot TBA): Dead rookie cop Jake Morgan returns to narrate the goings-on in his family. Comments: Seems more like a soap than a genre series.
Honestly, not going to fly.

No decisive comment for now.

BTW, aren't there any new genre shows that will air in syndication this Fall? After all, that's how Star Trek: The Next Generation & Deep Space Nine, Hercules: The Legendary Journey, and Xena: Warrior Princess got started.

Maybe someone will take another stab at a Sinbad or Pirates show sometime soon...

Oh dear God!

I just had this horrible vision of Pirates of the Carribean: The TV Series.

Starring two young pretty boys who can't act trying to pretend they're Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom. With a jacked up version of whats-her-name.

I'm going to go wash out my brain before that image sticks.
