As for those who think bards can be effective skirmishers/archers, I find this peculiar. The skirmisher/archer type is far more effective as a fighter/rogue, combining the fighter's proficiencies and feats with the rogue's skills and sneak attacks.
A good archer bard knows nice buffing spells like Expeditious Retreat, Magic Weapon, Cat's Grace, Haste, Improved Invisibility, etc. and has his Inspire abilities, which often make him way more valuable in battle than a fighter/rogue (although he would lose an archery contest). And a bard with some fighter levels has good saves (esp. a good will save compared to fighter/rogue) and can escape from hazardous situations (Exp. Retreat, Invisibility, etc.).

In the Bards I've run Int has been the next most important stat. I've been the "Speaker" for the party and been very successful at it with the use of the skills (the added skill points are a must IMO). Other characters have tried to make good impressions but they all fall short to my Bards Cha but the extra skills points from Int have come in handy.

My Bards have tried to aviod combat or at least been either in the back using his Bardic Music or coming around the side, I try to stay out of the forefront of any battle so Dex is not as important then the extra skill points. Afterall in combat you might get your clothes dirty or even worse- you might get them sliced open from an opposing blade. You can't perform in rags, it just woundn't do.:D :p
