What's the most over-used magic item?

Anything +1, but in particular since the release of 3.5, rings of protection +1, since they felt the need to increase the cost of magic items, thus the only 2000 gp ring is a Ring of Protection +1.

The answer is obvious.

Bag of Holding. (Or the Handy Heaversack... Any item that is bigger on the inside then it seems on the outside.)

Everybody has or wants at least one, without exception.

I'm not saying that it's a bad thing, it's just something you nearly always see in a moderate to high magic setting.

Those and Boots of striding and springing are fairly popular in most games I have run since the release of 3.0
 


Potion of Healing/Curing. Every character usually has a couple, somebody carries extras, and they're always looking to restock.

After that, mmm, +1 Longsword. What adventure doesn't have +1 longswords? For low-level adventures it's either carried in the party, or found somewhere in the treasure pile. For higher level adventures, almost every grunt-enemy carries one at his hip.
 


Aren't slippers of spider climbing basically described as fashioned of flimsy silk? As a DM, I'd rule that they couldn't be worn all the time without ruining them.

But yes, definitely bags/haversacks, and speedy/jumping boots.

I was going to say that but you beat me to it Doppleganger!

Of course, this hasn't changed much over the years. I remember 1e campaigns where magic was unbuyable and essentially uncraftable,, and yet every city guardsmen and his wife had one after about level 5 or so! :D

Not of course, that you could actually acquire them. After all, if the watch got beat up on, there were always mysterious high level clerics and magic-users that came out of the woodwork and captured the party (and the penalty was always just 'one little favour'!)

I guess these days I am used to seeing a lot of CL1 wands of cure light wounds floating around. Indeed I had to admit that they are an item that every temple keeps in stock as a basic 'adventurer attractant'.
