What's up with Scimitar Dance

I think people generally have the idea of curvy swords being all wicked fast, while straight swords are more prosaic and meant for sword-and-board.

I had a TWF ranger in 1E, before Vault of the Drow even hit the shelves, let alone that Drizzle punk.

It's really kind of an obvious way to go in 1E, even if TWF was a little obscure. An Archer is an obvious ranger concept, a 1E Archer needed high DEX & STR, and couldn't strap on a shield. 1E TWF benefitted from high STR, but the penalty (-2/-4) was reduced by high DEX. If your DEX was 17 or 18, you had no penalty with your primary weapon, so the secondary (which had to be a dagger or hand axe) was pure proffit. When your archer had to go into melee, TWF was an ideal choice. It was burried in the DMG, but if you found it and snuck it by your DM (it was broken, even then, though as nothing compared to what it would become with Specialization in 2E), it was gold.

Um, anyway, 4e is sticking with the 3e paradigm of weapon-specific feats to differentiate melee types a bit, there's the scimitar feat, and a hammer feat that works the same, but uses CON instead of DEX. I'm sure Martial Power will have that same basic mechanic for every weapon or weapon group, and every stat. "Hah! My Dazzling Rapier feat does charisma damage even when I miss!"

Hammer Rhythm. Same feat, but with hammers. Let's see what else we can find in the paragon tier.

Deadly Axe, Heavy Blade Opportunity, Light Blade Precision, Polearm Gamble, Spear Push, Sweeping Flail...

It looks to me like they're just trying to make weapons of different types "feel" different in play, above and beyond just what powers a fighter chooses. A curved blade handles differently than a straight blade, so it deserves its own category (apparently).

Drizzt certainly played a part in what bonus scimitars received, but the idea of the scimitar dervish didn't start with the drow, and it certainly won't end with him.

Nah, scimitars get the benefit of Heavy Blade Opportunity too. They get all the options that a longsword would get, plus Scimitar Dance.

I wouldn't mind if it was just Blade Flurry or Blade Dance (and applied to any heavy blade).
