What's up with Spider Climb?

New member? Not so. I've been around for the past couple of years or so, back when this was still Eric Noah's site. I don't post very often though. :)

fighting on the ceiling

On the topic of Spider Climb, how do you all adjudicate characters- be they NPC or PC- who fight from the wall or ceiling under the influence of this spell- say, with slippers, so the 'bare feet' rule doesn't apply. I've always pictured people walking on the walls and ceiling, attacking without penalty, since there's no mention of how to handle it in the spell description.

Thoughts?

This is probably 1st edition contagion, but I remember the book where slippers of spider climbing were introduced. It was the extra monster book included with module S4 - Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth (sp?). It had a picture with a guy just standing on a high ceiling, holding a sword, while two bugbears or whatever stood talking beneath him. You knew he was on the ceiling, because he had a bag or whatever, hung from one shoulder to the other side normally, but it was hanging down toward the bugbears. A very interesting image, and I never questioned it in 3E.

The slippers say 'per the spell', I believe, and that would break that image. I have an archer who, at early levels, would shoot opponents will 'standing' on walls or ceilings. My basis for that was this image, but perhaps it was wrong. The spell does not exactly translate to a magic item very well.

I remember that module! The first creature that wore the Slippers lived in a big, spherical room. It ran up and down the walls, around the ceiling, and so forth, without getting any penalty to attacks.

Damn, that was a cool adventure. And they ganked a lot of its art for the 2e rulebooks.

Wasn't it a vampire?
