Sometimes people think "like 5E" means "roll a d20 and add some numbers, as long as they aren't too big" plus advantage/disadvantage. People do it all the time with Shadowdark.

I think what makes a game 5E is deeper than that and built into all the system of the game.

You're probably thinking about this in a more sophisticated way than I am. If I can take my 5E players and say, "It's a lot like 5E, you'll figure it out as we play" then that's "like 5E". And Shadowdark fits into that category for me, yes.

Based on a few threads now, I am beginning to feel like AI might be the most misunderstood 5E book of all. i know I never bought it because I was not audience for the AP, but maybe I missed out?

Player content were to make that "Acquisitions Inc." flavour that really overpowers the player, but the base system was good (change something and it is setting-indipendent). Nowadays you have the Bastion system. The adventure (only read it, to be honest) seems a lot of fun to master and play!

I can see WotC putting it into a compilation of crazy alternate settings (a 5E Manual of the Planes, at long last?) but I suspect it's low on the list of projects as far as return on investment goes.

It would be cool if the named it the Codex of the Infinite Planes after the artifact in the 1e DMG.
