What's your perfect movie

For me it's Jurassic Park. I've lost track of how often I've watched it but I love it every time I watch it. I love the ones that followed (I'm a dino fan), but the first one for me is the best. Sure, the large drop at the t-rex pen doesn't really make sense but the characters, the dinosaurs, the t-rex appearance, the suspense when they're trying to escape the raptors all combine to make a great movie and I think it still holds up really well even after more than 30 years since its release.

I used to think Star Wars maybe mostly fond memories as a child. The dialogue and acting might not have been great, but the feel and excitement was there. Jaws was always a movie I could watch. The tension and politics of the character motivations was great. An often quoted movie. Godfather deserves to be up there. As I get older, maybe Shawshank Redemption which is another often quoted movie with great character tension and dialogue.

I have so many:

The Rear Window
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Jaws
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Casablanca
The Godfather
Stand By Me
The Breakfast Club
Do The Right Thing
Die Hard
The Princess Bride
The Fellowship of the Ring

It’s really hard to focus in on just one of those because I think they are all perfect movies in their particular genres, and they are movies I’ve watched dozens of times.

My favourite movie is Aliens. "Perfect" is a slightly different category for me, and to me implies an assessment of the artistry, not just how I emotionally feel about the film. A film where I have basically no notes. That's just my interpretation of the topic, of course. I think Toy Story is a perfectly constructed film. The whole Before trilogy. The Incredibles. Now I think about it, I think Alien is probably a more "perfect" film than Aliens, even though I slightly prefer the latter (I think).

For me, I guess perfect means “feels perfectly executed the first time you see it, no notes; it then holds up very well if you rewatch it”. I’ve felt like that about very few films, as you might expect, but I’d say:
  • Grosse Pointe Blank
  • Big Hero Six
  • Klaus
