I signed up for Roll20 years ago, back when it was maybe the only option and maybe one of only a few. I've never used anything else and I see no reason to.
Roll20 was never the only option. Back when it started (2012) their were several established VTTs at the time including; Map Tools, Battlegrounds, Fantasy Grounds, d20 Pro and I'm sure a couple others.

I think what differentiated Roll20 is that it was entirely in the cloud and you only needed an internet browser. Map Tools, Fantasy Grounds, and d20pro (I'm not familiar with Battlegrounds) all require both the DM and players to install software. Roll20 may not have been the only fully cloud hosted VTT when it came out, but the only one that became widely used.

Two more big ones. It's free. Sure, you need a sub if you want to do fog of war and that stuff, but to start it's free. And the one nobody gives it credit for is the search engine for open spots in games. On a whim, when the Call of Cthulhu kickstarter arrived, I searched for a game on roll20. I'm still playing with the same GM.

Or really summed up: zero barrier to entry.

I understand the general point you're making, but I just want to point out its not the only free one. There may be other barriers to entry on some of those, but if that's a big benefit, its a big benefit to those, too.

The 3d one? It's in alpha. Like 4000 people in the discord. It looks good, but I've not tried to play on it yet, since one of my players in on Mac. Which is not yet supported. Any specific questions? This latest update was very big in improvements from what I see
Yeah, that one. Hadn't heard anything in quite some time. It looked....interesting.

Agreed, Roll20's Find a Game service is still one of the best ways to find games online. I've used it many times. Mostly for one shots. Either just because I wanted to be a player for once or because I wanted to try a system I've never played, usually both.

I used to use Roll20, but it failed me on multiple accounts. Once I finished DMing Curse of Strahd, I migrated over to Foundry, of which I'm a player in 2 games for. It's been a wholesale improvement.
