When did "PHB" become "PH"?

i never used the phb when saying it out loud. i always say 1edADnD players handbook (1978). yes, i include the date.

I don't think I ever even noticed there were two spellings until this thread. Now every time I see either I have to pause to interrupt my thought and wonder why there are two versions.
