AFAIK, the first store in London that specialised in RPGs was Games Workshop located at 1 Dalling Road, Hammersmith. At the time, it was the only Games Workshop. The Dalling Road store has since relocated to nearby King Street and the Games Workshop chain has grown just a bit since then. :p

There was also Games People Play in Notting Hill Gate. I believe that started as a Wargames store that diversified into RPGs. I'm not sure when it began but it closed in the 1990's. It is now the Diana Cafe.

I think Pendragon Games in Winnipeg has been around since the mid/late 80s - but I was just a babe then, so like I know :D

One funny story I've heard from some grognards is the tale behind Campaign Outfitters, a now-closed (and reopened, under a different name) game store here in the Peg. The original owner, back in the day when he was just a gamer, went into Pendragon Games and bought a RPG book. When he gets home, he cracks it open, and the book falls apart at the seams - the pages are literally falling from the covers. He then, as a (rightfully) indignant customer, takes the book back to Pendragon Games foir a refund. The owner refuses to give money back, so the Campaign Outfitters owner-to-be gives the Pendragon manager the finger all the way out the door and then opens up Campaign Outfitters soon-thereafter, just to spite Pendragon Games.

It's too bad CO closed down - they were way more friendly then PG ever is.

cheers,

In upstate NY the first Hobby store that carried rpg stuff was already open by the time I got into the game in 1979. I don't even remember what it's name was or even where it was. But it WAS already open and STOCKED with a LOT of stuff. Even then! :D

We had one I am sure was already open in 1979 called Le Mason de Guerre. (sp?). I think the Last Grenadier may have been already been open about at the same time or within a few years after. Then there was a series of stores that dealt with with poker, roulette and other games as well as rpgs, but I don't remember the name.
