They're great and I highly recommend ones with a variable allowance for distance they can go.

Sure, there are all kinds of players and all kinds of reasons to play. Learning about a fictional world may be one of those things, to one degree or another.

I don't think this is unique to worlds where the GM won’t budge about elements. It need not compromise their passion.

Ah, I see, I mistook your position as being against detailed homebrew worlds in general. Carry on.

You know, I thought about it, because buying the batteries suck--but since I got rechargeable batteries I don't sweat it. Also, I used them too long and I am past the return policy deadline.

"Allow the player what they'd like" does mean "allow everything." It just doesn't necessarily mean "allow everything all at once." If I'm supposed to allow the player what they'd like, how does that not put everything on the table as a choice?

Because you have a limited number of players and a limited number of characters they’ll play.

If you talk to the players, if you collaborate, you can actually create a setting that’s more likely to suit everyone.

If you create the world without any input from them at all, and then won’t budge if any conflict does come up… then I’d question who the setting is meant to be for.

It's all putting oneself above others instead of being considerate to people who are presumably friends.

Internet pick-up games being different because mutual suffering is a given and perhaps a requirement, of course.

Hey everyone raise your hands if you only gamed at tables were everyone were friends with everyone. BEFORE the game. I have game with tables with 4/5 were friends. I have gamed with tables which 50% friends and their +1 ones. I have game with one friend and I was the plus one. And I have game with randoms.

Presumably my friends know my triggers and will not bring them up. But some of us don't have or ever hand the option of playing with best friends for lives only.

I really don't think I implied it's a chore, or that the person doing it aggrieved about it, or any sort of negative attitude. I'm just recognizing that it, especially in the context of 5e, is generally more work than the player is asked to do. I'm appreciative of them doing that.

Because every one of these arguments are always massively aggrieved.

The poor DM, lashed tot he wheel, forced to do all the work for those wicked players. And the only glimmer of hope and joy they are allowed is just one simple, tiny little thing-- being the only person whose preferences matter and whose word is unarguable law, set above those sad plebs who are damn lucky they deign to do a fun creative activity that is such an awful burden apparently.

I wish the books would do more to to foster an entertainer mentality rather than a small god complex.

Yep. Elementary school through college.

Once in college, I also joined some games where all the others were friends and I was the new guy, but I also had games with friends in college (before the game).

After college, it has been a mix, about half "friends-first" and half "friends-after".

I mean, I've been DMing this way since the beginning, and frankly every other DM I have ever played with DM's this way as well. I really don't see why you feel this is a problem?
