I have to admit I'm a little spoiled in the character death aspect. I've never permanently lost a PC. The only time my PC has ever died (in another GM's campaign, obviously), she did so practically at the feet of a goddess for whom the party had just done a huge favor. So naturally the goddess raised her right then and there. I've always been very lucky to avoid PC death. Some of the other GMs I play with fudge occasionally too, but in their case it's usually because they've got a metaplot in progress that would be really screwed up by a cast change.

I'll have to talk with the other players. I know some of them have asked to create new characters too, and been turned down. But I think my question did alert him that there's some dissatisfaction brewing. It probably won't change his GMing style, but maybe we can refresh the campaign, or start a new one with new expectations. He's not totally inflexible; he did allow me to change PCs in his Champions game when I got frustrated with my superhero character. I'm not sure why he's reluctant now. He's actually become somewhat more flexible as a GM in recent years, although it seems he's becoming less flexible as a player.
 

A GM that bends over backwards to keep the characters alive bugs me to no end. My attitude usually becomes suicidal (for the character, not me). I take on bigger and bigger risks until it's clearly impossible that I would survive.

As such, I recommend that your character commits seppuku :)

I'll occasionally fudge rolls, but not that often- only when it's obvious that there's a good chance of TPK due to my miscalculating an encounter. However, since I generally run at levels where Raise magic is readily available, I don't have to worry about the death of PCs too much. I would definately let someone choose to stay dead if they wanted a new character- heck, that's how the spell works in the first place.

As for dealing with the DM- if direct conversation isn't the thing (and it sounds like it might not be), I would try to get someone else take over running the game for a while, with the DM playing a PC, so that he can see what the group would actually prefer to be playing. If that still doesn't work, then at least you've had a bit of a break.

Of course, if it really is a control issue, then the DM might not want to surrender the reins for a while, either.
 

I'd just like to take ethis time to say how cool my DM is. We call him Senor, because he's our Spanish teacher at school. He doesn't ahve a good night unless someone dies or atleast comes close. I LOVE IT! Our campaign leans towards HNS but Senor knows who likes to RP and how much. ANyway, we jsut managed to convert from version 2 to 3.5 so he's still getting used to it. So we end up fighting demons and dragons left and right, I LOVE IT! Whenever he sees a character getting too powerful he keeps it even by having something like, their god is displeased with them and until they act better again they can't use their favorite sword. Senor, YOU RULE.

AS for your DM, you jsut need to have a group discussion there's no way around it.
 

DMs that are afraid to kill their characters bug me a lot. I guess this comes from a DM who didn't pull punches and ran into a few TPKs (quite a lot, actually). I don't view this as a bad thing, as I learned a lot of good adventuring "basics." To not kill characters denies players that opportunity to learn. The risk of character death heightens any campaign storyline for me. Story schmory, what is the story worth when the protagonists have nothing to lose and will not lose? I think that applies to both role-playing intense and combat intense gaming styles. There has to be an element of risk, otherwise where is any kind of tension or interest going to come from?

DMs afraid to kill PCs. It brings something out of me.

Even if it appears that the DM will not listen, you and your fellow players will have to talk to him. It may not be a big crisis or anything like that now, but give it time, it could fester. Better to cauterize it now. Nip it in the bud. Cut the crap, etc. etc.

Awesome.

Dying at the feet of a goddess is probably one of the the coolest places for a PC to die.

Several Ideas for you to mull over, some may seem drastic:

Start a romance with an NPC, or if your brave, with another PC. I sugest that you choose a player that you trust, and that is in on the plot vs your DM. Let the Romance heat up. You dont have to be graphic about this but, at some point declair that your character thinks that she is pregnant. This will have several possible effects. You can interject alot of Rollplaying with this. If the DM eventually agrees that your PC is pregnant, he will at some point have to agree that your PC is not fit for combat missions. New PC. Also you and the PC that you are having the "romance" with can take turns rescuing the other PC from danger. The other PC should feal "honor bound" to "do the right thing" and marry your PC and to settle down from the life of an adventure and stay home with his new family.


Start buying land, and start building your castle/temple/guild/lab...
Build BIG, Give this project high priorty. Start a community. Get involved in local politics.
Declair yourslef as KING!!! Start a war, End a War with Heavy Diplomacy. Focus on the world arround you ask your DM leading Questions about this world that you are playing in. Make him detail minor thing that he has not paid attention to. Press him for more info. When your DM sends you on another combat drop, Zig left and presue a minor tangent. Go ahead and do the combat mission but only after you have made him explore your tangent.

Goin the RPGA
There are alot of members in the RPGA and I a sure that you can find some in your area. Pick one of the Living Campaings and have fun. ( I suggest Living Arcanis but I am partial)

Find other gamging groups and join them.

Ask someone else in the group to DM let your current DM have a break
DM a game your self, Show the DM what kind of game you would like

Sounds like you need some thing to change. Find away to bring your DM along with the change or leave him behind.
