When the original Star Wars trilogy comes out on DVD...

Anyway, DVD holds a lot of footage. Maybe they can release all three versions on each disk, and let us pick...
The sick part is, I want like a 3 disc uber-set for each flick. Put the original on one disc with full commentaries. Put the SE on disc two with more commentaries, this time about the changes. And the third disc can be for all the extras they can get their grubby hands on. Deleted scenes, commercials, interviews, set pieces, blah blah blah. I would buy something like that in a heartbeat. The trilogy deserves the ultimate royal treatment. Moreso than just about any other movies I can think of.

They should take a page from how well they have done so far with the menus and the like from the prequel DVD's and expand it. Take a page from Kevin Smith's DVD releases (yeah, I know some were old laserdisc rehashes, but still) and a DVD set like the original Fight Club 2-disc set. Really pack stuff in.

Oh yeah, that's the stuff. :)

I'll tell you why the "Greedo Shoots First" does not set well with me:

It was done very poorly. No matter how many technical processes you have at your disposal, the only way Lucas will get the scene he really wanted was if he got a Face-double to re-shoot harrison's part. He just didn't have the footage to support it.

Also, I too believe that the characterization of Han was harmed. He's a grey-area smuggler, for goodness' sake! He's going to shoot first to defend himself!

Finally, it harms the VERY SCENE Lucas masterfully had restored - the meeting with Jabba. Jabba from that scene was VERY clear he wanted Han alive. Later, we even see in Empire Strikes Back that Boba Fett was very careful to keep him alive. Not that Jabba couldn't have changed his mind in 3 years, but it was VERY consistent that he wanted Han's money or Han himself in Mos Eisley.

It was clear Han knew that if he let Greedo take him, it was the end of his freedom and possibly his life. The Greedo shot really flew in the face of all the other scenes that supported it. If Lucas ever listened to the fans, this one issue is the sorest point among a large percentage of his fan base.

One small point, by the time of the cantina scene Jabba was no long interested in the money and just wanted Han himself.

I just hope nobody doctors my favorite scene from ANH, where R2D2 and C3PO are hiding in a room just off the hanger flight deck.... Stormtroopers march in, and the last guy bangs his head on the door.

I love that part!

I have to say that, despite being dreadful movies with which I wouldn't wipe my tender behind, the DVD packages of both Clones and Menace are very well-done, and have lots and lots of top-notch extras. I bought both, but was never able to actually sit through Ep II at home.

Heheh, that would probably hurt. DVD's aren't as soft as they look. :D

I've only watched the commentary, myself. And to be honest I haven't even popped Ep1 in the player yet. I'm kinda waiting for all three to be out to watch them...

I love the SE's, save for three things:

1) Han shoots first. Mouseferatu and Henry have already summed up my feelings on that scene.

2) Hans dialogue change in RotJ on the skiff -- He used to simply say 'trust me' before shooting the tentacle from Lando's leg. They added in some 'I can see better now' crap to that part. Bleah. The original was much cooler and much more Han-like.

3) A minor, minor quibble -- I dont think the extended dance scene in Jabba's palace was necessary. However, it really is a minor complaint. Issues #1 and #2 are far more important.

Anyway, for the diehards that are interested in showing their love for the old school Star Wars, there is an online petition to urge Mr. Lucas to release the original Trilogy on DVD (though this does not exclude releasing the special editions with or separately from said discs).

Do you realize that I have spent the last 20 years wondering what Sni-Snoodles was singing at Jabba's palace???

Talk about morbid curiosity killing the cat ...

I've heard the english lyrics to it somewhere. It's something about a girl who likes to dance, if I remember correctly.

Another vote against the special edition. Just a bunch of stuff that didn't fit with the way Star Wars grew and evolved in my head.

Point one) For Greedo to miss at that range, no matter how it happens, indicates a serious lack of skill. Is he a bounty hunter or isn't he? You're not going to tell me that Han has the l33t ninja skillz to dodge a blaster bolt from two feet away.

Let me introduce you to a concept called "Hit Points".
