When the Wolf Comes is a Viking RPG Set in Modern Day

An alternate timeline where Vikings rule!

Rob Schwalb, whose name you may know from Shadow of the Demon Lord and multiple editions of a little game called Dungeons & Dragons, has announced the upcoming release of 'Vikingverse' tabletop RPG When the Wolf Comes.

The game is set in present day, in an alternate timeline where Vikings still exist, "ruling the seas and stars with restless fleets."

The game was on Kickstarter in August of last year, but after setbacks Schwalb Entertainment stepped in to help. There's no release date yet, but the announcement says it is coming soon on DriveThruRPG.

With Norse-themed video games, TV shows and novels continuing to be all the rage, Schwalb Entertainment is proud to welcome a new Viking IP to its expanding line up of tabletop role-playing games (RPG).

When the Wolf Comes is set in a pagan present, an alternate timeline where Christianity has been put to the Viking sword and history as we know it has been thrown to the wolves. The game was successfully Kickstarted in August 2022, but suffered several unexpected delays. Schwalb swooped in to ensure the project was back on track and in the hands of fans.

Schwalb said, “The Norse setting is so timeless, it really is the wellspring of all modern fantasy. I love the way the Vikingverse setting takes archetypes we know and love, and strips them back to their pre-Tolkien origins. Who doesn’t want to unleash their inner Viking? I’d suggest that the future is bright, but that’s what Trickster Gods and Demon Lords always say…”

Sharpe said, “The RPG was a chained and fettered beast. Like Vánagandr himself, backers howled wildly for news, a foaming river called “Expectation” flowing from their drooling mouths. Thankfully, Rob has shattered those chains, and now the Fenrisúlfr can run free, devouring everything in its path… I’ve spent two years immersed in his Shadow of the Demon Lord rules. I couldn’t be more excited to work with him directly.”

IAN STUART SHARPE/IÓN STÍVARÐUR SKARPI has written extensively about his alternate Vikingverse, a parallel timeline where the Norse rule the seas and stars with restless fleets and all other gods and religions are but historical footnotes. His titles include the All Father Paradox and Loki’s Wager, as well as the humorous phrasebook Old Norse for Modern Times and the Jötunn War comic series.

ROBERT SCHWALB/HRÓÐBJARTR SVABAR has been a game designer and developer in the role-playing games industry for nearly 20 years. His design can be found in three editions of Dungeons & Dragons, along with Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, A Song of Ice and Fire RPG, and Star Wars Saga Edition RPG. In 2015 he launched a successful Kickstarter campaign for Shadow of the Demon Lord, a horror-fantasy roleplaying game set in the last days of a dying world that has won rave reviews for its simplicity and style.

When The Wolf Comes is a game of storytelling, heroism, and epic struggle set during a reimagined Norse End of Days. A complete tabletop role playing game in one 400 page hardcover book, When The Wolf Comes provides everything you need to create and play characters, form warbands in pursuit of fame and plunder, and tell sci-fi sagas with your friends. The book also gives Game Masters all the tools they need to create adventures, a bestiary full of deadly creatures, a detailed history of the Níu Heimar, and extensive advice to help run the game.
