When you're the only one who likes what you like

Have you ever been the only person, among all those you associate with, who likes something? And everyone else is indifferent to displeased with it?

Because I'm starting to feel very alone in my like of 4e.

Outside of EnWorld, everyone I know who games is pretty down on it. I run a 4e game, and my players just openly insult it now - they had about a 5 minute "Yeah, it sucks this way too" conversation last session. My online friends will say, "I've grown to hate 4e - but this I like".

And then I come to EnWorld with its edition wars.

I'm not saying that the opinions aren't legitimate. But it's starting to seem like my like isn't legitimate. Me, I adore the system. So it feels like there's no where I can go - not my friends, not online gaming friends in casual conversation, not online forums - where what I like isn't being trashed. It's a culmination of becoming a joke or thing of contention everywhere I look.

It's starting to really hurt my feelings.

Interesting perspective. I have the exact opposite experience.

Every gamer I know plays 4e and loves it. My FLGS barely stocks any Pathfinder product at all because it doesn't sell, and when I talk to the employees there the only d20 game that sells and that their customer's play is 4e and SW Saga.

I have never actually met anyone in the flesh who prefers 3e/Pathfinder to 4e. I have only seen 3e/Paizo support come from D&D forum posters. It could all be coming from one guy with multiple accounts! ;) :p

Well, due to some inner drama, and in order to keep the game alive, it looks like the group is going to Pathfinder instead. Grrf.

Is playing 3.5/Pathfinder so bad? One advantage these games do have is the different mechanics for classes means you should be able to find one you enjoy.

Of course, if the others are saying "You get to DM a game you don't like" that's another matter. Invite one of them to DM.

Have you ever played a game you disliked? I mean, truly, truly disliked?

One you're only playing out of a sense of comraderie with your fellow players?

It can really grate on your nerves.

For me, that would be 4Ed or GURPS. For Rechan, it seems to be 3.X.

Not with RPGs. I did with some boardgames my friends liked, but I eventually got so annoyed I basically stopped playing boardgames with them (we still play RPGs together.) There's a saying on rpgnet I've come to agree with "No gaming is better than bad gaming."

Well, I don't like it myself, but that doesn't mean it's badwrongfun for you to like it. If you love 4th edition, don't let my opinion change that at all. I hope you go on loving and enjoying it for as long as possible.

I'm sad though that you're not finding anyone to share your enjoyment of it with. Still, I know I've seen plenty of people around who enjoy 4th ed... even plenty of people who enjoy bashing 3rd ed which helps me understand how you feel.

It's always sad when the fandom family fights amongst itself.

My condolences :p

On a serious note- as I alluded to in my OP- is playing D&D with these people worth it? IDK- but if there is "inner drama" about a game , and then you are forced into playing/running something you really DONT want to play, I'd be moving on if I was in your shoes. YMMV.

I have to agree.

The worst experience I ever had was playing Feng Shui. I hated going to those games - even though we probably only played for a total of 3 months. It ended up splitting our group up. (Which, actually, turned out to be a fantastic thing for those of us that went back to D&D - 2E at the time.)

Part of it is that we're beginning at level 1. So, even if I like the classes in and of themselves, level 1 is limited imho. And I'll be leaving before we up there.

They're my friends. I want the group to survive. If I said, "No, I don't want to play with you guys," I think it would smack of pouting, or like I was holding a grudge. It would also likely hurt their chances of having fun, or doing what they want, instead trying and placate me.

Besides, half the reason I game in the first place is the social interaction. I don't get much of it, so it's just a time to hang out and have fun with my friends when otherwise I wouldn't have the opportunity.

So while no gaming is better than bad gaming, bad gaming is better than not seeing your friends.
