When you're the only one who likes what you like

Even as I read through the rules for the Beta, man I am dreading this. I sound whiny but, just nothing looks good. I'm not really looking forward to two months of being level 1.

I guess this is how my players felt.

Man up, princess. ;)

Seriously, this isn't the end of the world. You're not playing your favorite game to pretend to be an elf in? Ah, well. Have fun where you can, let the annoyances roll off your back, and be a good sport.

You'll never have any fun if you're determined not to. Resolve to have fun. Resolve to enjoy things that are enjoyable and ignore things that are not enjoyable.

Feel free to vent on ENWorld, I'm sure there's others who would appreciate your position, but I think if you just roll with it, there won't be much need to vent. ;)

I have never actually met anyone in the flesh who prefers 3e/Pathfinder to 4e. I have only seen 3e/Paizo support come from D&D forum posters. It could all be coming from one guy with multiple accounts! ;) :p

Well, I have only met four people in real life playing 4e.

Player 1: She plays it, because her boyfriend DMs it. The last time I had talked with her, she was having fun, but preferred 3e. I'll get a more recent opinon when she comes to visit next week for her birthday.

Player 2: She has played a lot of 3e and played 4e once or twice at low levels. She is not certain that she will like it at mid to upper levels (she hadn't looked over the rule books when I last saw her six months ago, but, from what she heard, some of the more gamist aspects like the rules for daily item useage didn't sit well with her). She is also visiting next week for Player 1's birthday, but she hasn't gamed at all since she visited six months ago so I can't get an update on her thoughts about 4e.

Player 3 (DM): He had been out of gaming before 3e was released. He got the itch to return and introduce his kids to D&D just in time for 4e and felt intimidated by the number of 3e supplements. He is enjoying it and we discuss what we find to be the merits and flaws of 3e and 4e (despite my preference for 3e using UA and some third party supplements, I do find elements of 4e that I prefer over 3e).

Player 4: He liked Iron Heroes so I was not too surprised that to hear that he was playing 4e. I think the only tastes we share in gaming is Mutants and Masterminds.

The other 30+ gamers that I know don't touch 4e.

Heck, my friends and I often wouldn't play each other's games because of 'house' rules or personal preferences.

For example, I'm a big fan of point buy systems and hate random rolling for things like ability scores and hit points. So when I ran 3e, it was point buy and fixed hit points. Some loved it, some hated it. I hate random rolling for hit points so much, that while I'll still play 3e, I won't play any game that uses random rolling for hit points and ability scores.

D&D 3e got to be such a huge beast with all of the third party support and variant rules in official books that it often took a tome the size of the PHB itself to showcase what our current rule sets were.

Well, due to some inner drama, and in order to keep the game alive, it looks like the group is going to Pathfinder instead. Grrf.

It's also kind of funny. I am going back over my 3e material/looking at the PF Beta, and my brain is just continually screaming "Do not want to go back!" along with the sound of screeching tires. :)
Once again, I have to suggest not playing. You're moving in a couple months, use the time to see about meeting some players in the new area and wrapping up all of the things you need to before you move. Go see a movie or two with your friends in the area and don't look back. Come by EnWorld and debate anything about 4E you like.

Because no gaming is better than bad gaming where you dread going to the game. Leave dread for work!

I feel for you...good luck.
