A large creature occupies 10x10 feet worth of squares, or four squares.
A medium creature can choose any of the squares on the large mount that seem appropriate.
I think it's possible for your character to be placed on any of the squares for a range of scenarios - you could be riding hard and be near the horses front (shoulders) only for you to end at the rear as you engage in combat because you character decides to move off the saddle at the last moment - perhaps an athletics check is required now because the saddle is not being used.

I also think that a DM requiring a choice of either of the front two squares for a saddled horse would be appropriate.

What about a huge mount?
When youre a medium size on a huge mount I say you're in whatever space you say you are on the mount cuz it's so big and you're off the ground away from many attacks and making melee attacks yourself.you have to actively move from one space to the next.. it's less that you're mounted and more like you're on a platform 😆

So, hear me out...

If you have a medium creature riding a large ogre that is on riding on top of a huge elephant then it would be considered quite a feat to maintain... and henceforth called a mountain

I've always ruled that the rider is in the middle of the mount, they can change that but need to make a check to do so and risk falling off if they fail. A Rider on a horse covers the whole horse, on an elephant it occupies the center 5 foot space of the elephants back (the rest of the elephants back is an uneven surface), on a gargantuan or collosal mount the rider occupies the center spot and can move around the mounts back

I couldn't find any official rules in the O5E/A5E core, the ones I found are back in the 4e DMG: You are somewhere on your mount, if it is really important where on your mount you are then "you decide")
3.5 is even shorter: "For simplicity, assume that you share your mount’s space during combat." (Which I am sure NOBODY exploited in any way)

yeah the offical ruling is a bit rubbish

I'd think the horse's head and neck would provide you cover, which looks better from a rear square. And it puts a lance's effective range five feet ahead of the horse.

A shorter answer though: you're in whatever square the saddle is in.
