On the subject of local stores not knowing about the early release dates, I'm not sure who is to blame. I found out because I attended WotC seminar at my distributor's Open House. (I will admit I checked for this specifically because D&D is my game of choice.) But I don't remember seeing any email announcements from either of my distributors, nor from WotC direct.
For WotC, on the monthly preorder form, the release date is buried on the item line for the Starter Set, along with SKU, Qty, Description (just game system, title, and carton quantity), Limit, MSRP, Cost, and Official Release. Along with about eight Magic releases with the same info. (WotC does not have any preorder info up yet for August or later.) In all a pretty dry spreadsheet listing.
For Alliance, they have a separate stock number for the early release vs the standard release date, so if when looking the item up you enter the standard stock code, you will only see the later release date.
ACD's online ordering does not even list release dates at all for anything.
Now my reps may not have contacted me about the early releases because I had contacted them immediately to place my orders, and I made sure they had me down for the early dates and not just the regular release dates. But it's almost like a store has to know about the early release to ask about the early release.
