NEW FEAT: Unarmed Combat.

You gain a +2 proficiency bonus when using an unarmed attack.

Add weapon focus for +2 damage, take Acrobatics and Athletics, and 90% of the Monk is already done.

I think I might use your swarm in my game, although it would need some in play adjustment. I can just imagine someone using Burning Hands on the mob...

Of course, you don't just want to have rules for punches/gouges/slaps etc.

What about those odd impro weapons that get used in fantasy tavern brawls: jugs of mead, table legs, boar heads, halflings....

all one handed impro weapons (such as unarmed strikes) are all the same.

two handed impro weapons do more.

Well, I'm going to try to have the fight happen when the characters are without armor (upstairs in their room). And if the white trash family doesn't break out a dagger then I'm hoping the wizard doesn't break out burning hands.

If so that character will end up in jail and the player can make a new one. Always a good lesson for a player to learn. Kill unarmed NPCs in town and your character goes bye bye.

I would very quickly house rule that fighting unarmed against an armed opponent grants combat advantage. It doesn't make sense that picking up a crowbar in a brawl would grant you absolutely no advantage. Combat advantage is simple, quick, fun for rogues.

I would probably house rule that unarmed does not count as using a weapon unless you take the proficiency feat. So people that are trained in unarmed combat can use their weapon specific powers and no longer grant combat advantage. Is this too complicated? I mean come on, its like learning the alphabet compared to 3e...

Haha. That's funny.

It makes sense to me. It really ups the ante if someone draws a weapon in a barfight. They'll be at a much bigger advantage with combat advantage. (Duh...) And if they're a rogue, they'll start slaughtering.

Even if you drop someone to 0 hps with Burning Hands, you can declare that you just 'knocked them out' (or, maybe, disabled them with 2nd degree burns - whatever).
