Deities and Demigods has Fauns, and explains they may be a cross between Saytrs and humans, or elves.

Still dunno how you get straight Saytrs though. Or perhaps, being an all male race, you get more when they're not "Straight".

Additionally, why would sailors be tempted by mermaids? The fiddly bits are all wrong. I mean, hand holding and canoodling are fine, but you can't walk her to the door after an evening of dancing. On the other hand, she probably won't blow your entire paycheck on shoes...

Never underestimate the lure of boobs.

Plus, consider the following:

I think that many of the unexplained one sex races are fey (some humanoid races are one sex but the book usually gives alittle explaination as to how they reproduce, where asexual reproducation is the obvious answer (there really are animals that asexually reproduce so thats not much of a stretch, I think a certain frog does, and other, maybe extinct animals). But Fey are "spirits of nature" so nature makes sure they exist, such as an oak turning into a dryad...Just like Demons can spontaneously spawn in the Abysss, Fey spawn in some way on the Material Plane (the specifics are up to the DM I suppose)... So, I dont think there is an easy answer the that question it will differ in different worlds... but it isnt inherently nonsensical...

In a past Ecology article in Dragon, it mentioned that when a satyr and dryad hooked up, the result was either a baby satyr or dryad.

as for the rest...
