Interesting. For some reason I always thought of ENWorld users as a bastion of B&M store purchasers and that I was one of the odd ones out. Funny how I was wrong about that at least thus far.

I do however want to raise the question again about fantasy novels etc for purchase electronically. Who does this currently and also where is the best place to do this etc.?

RPG Books I purchase mostly online with my Amazon Prime account. It just doesn't make sense for me to spend full price on most books (Only those over $20, in general) with the discounts Amazon offers.

There are exceptions: if I want a book when it comes out, I'll preorder it from my FLGS (as I did with Pathfinder) because sometimes there's a delay before Amazon will stock it. I also purchase most of my gaming aids (dice, miniatures, etc.) from my FLGS. And, as I inferred, if a book is $20 or less (or Amazon isn't offering a discount on it), I will pick it up at my FLGS rather than waiting on it from Amazon.

I don't think I'm hurting my FLGS that much, though. I suspect most of their revenue comes from board game and CCG sales.

I do buy a lot on line, besides gaming stuff. I make an effort to buy that from my FLGS.

In the transition the owner will have to figure out a way forward, and he knows it.

I purchase mostly online these days, but that wasn't true just a few short years ago when I tried to purchase most things from a local game store. What changed for me was :

A) The local stores that carried RPG materials closed so the closest one is now a 6 hour drive away. When out of town I always make an effort to visit the "local" gaming stores and usually pick up a few things - but I don't make the 6+ hour trip all that often.

B) Paizo owns my soul. Most my RPG money goes that way these days and their subscription model is pretty sweet if you're interested in having both print and PDF copies.

I buy almost exclusively from my FLGS, because I want them to stay in business! They give a good discount, and are all around good supporters of the hobby.

I do order the occasional book online, especially hard to find or out of print stuff, though.

Books I generally buy online with Amazon Prime. The discounts are just too good, and it lets me buy books that I would not have otherwise. The upcoming 4E Player's Handbook 3 is a good example. I'm not all that interested in the psionic classes, but am already using some of the previewed content (hybrids, the seeker class). I was torn on whether to buy the book or not, given that I have D&DI. I'm still kind of on the fence about it in fact, even with the Amazon pricing, but without that substantial discount I wouldn't even be considering it.

Other gaming supplies such as dice and miniatures, I often buy locally or at conventions. I did just make an online purchase from Troll and Toad of some individual minis, because it's so easy to find what you want and the prices are good. I've bought metal minis from Reaper directly, although Miniature Market is nice as well. If you are looking for a specific mini, it can be hard to find it in a store - even if they happen to have it, it is likely hidden away on their display rack among countless little blister packs.

It's difficult for the local stores to compete with the selection and pricing you can get online. I do try to support them when I can, but it often feels when I go into a FLGS, I am looking for something to buy just for the purpose of supporting the store rather than because I need the item. When I need something specific, I tend to hit the internet first.

RPG stuff - Online, primarily Amazon.
I believe in saving money, so if I got the choice of waiting a week and having it delivered to my door for 20-50% less than I can get it (if it's in stock) at a brick and mortar store I will do that.
This included Novels as well.
There isn't any RPG out there I will absolutly must have that minute it is available.

Now this doesn't mean I won't stop in a store. If I see something I like, I will probably buy it there. But generally its just for a mini's purchase or two, but even those I get online by the case.

The money savings overrides any need to support the LGS.

That and most LGS nowadays don't cater to my wants in games.

FLGS, specifically the Compleat Strategist in NYC.

It would be inconvenient if they went out of business, so they get all of mine.

Cheers, -- N

I used to have some FLGS. They went away, some quite some time ago.

There is a Borders I browse at, and feel obliged to buy from once in a while.

But price and selection make online just too competitive.

I have started to add to my collection of vintage materials, something I have not done in a while. Again, back in the day, the FLGS would have all sorts of awesome stuff, albiet in a range of conditions.

But without them, its online or nothing.
