Where have all the true geeks gone? :)

Hmm... I guess I'm only a fringe geek. I'm 41, and I don't care for sports, can't work on a car, don't care to be outside in the sun at all, don't hunt, and refuse to argue politics or religion. On the flipside, I've never watched more than hour of Buffy, Angel, or Babylon 5 combined...I tried...they bored me out of my mind. I don't have any game system's rules memorized, and never will. I know the parts I need to know to run a good game, and can reference the rest.

Yet I love D&D (in all the editions I've played), love history (even my sci-fii history... I love the history of the Star Trek universe), would rather read the "technical manuals" of Star Trek than any of the novels, I'm a complete maniac for new paleontological discoveries, and am fascinated by deep sea life. I love Star Wars and cheesy "classic" sci-fi and fantasy. Much prefer the pulp fantasy of Burroughs or Howard over modern fantasy, and have read and re-read the Elric Series more times than I can count. I can quote Hitchiker's like a preacher.

So I dunno if I'm a geek or not. You got me questioning my creds.

I played baseball & soccer as a kid. In high school I played football & wrestled, and had a few scholarship offers for each. Later I spent some time coaching both at the HS level. I joined the Marine Corps out of HS. Went back and played JUCO Football for two years and then spent time working for the NSA before returning home to bartend for the better part of a decade.

I am an avid college football fan and played for a rugby club team until I realized the importance of good knees!

I played wargames before RPGs and picked up my first d20 circa 1980 or so. In the early 90's I saw MtG as the spawn of the devil and hate them cluttering up "our" gaming stores (much as the wargamers reacted to us a decade before).

I am a jock. I am a Marine. I am a geek.

I'm a young'un, I guess, and I dislike sports strongly for the principles behind sports today...

I'm not sure if I fit the stereotype right, though, because I do a variety of theatre, literature, mythology, science, etc. Anything that isn't sports, which may or may not set me up for the stereotype. Then again, I was voted to the Homecoming Court my senior year in high school, so I guess I'm not ;)
I'm in the same boat with Rystil here.

My friends and I fit this sport liking steriotype exactly. We're all in our early 20's and very active in sports, social life, and the "popular crowd". We got out start in our mid-twenties with adventures like "The Keep on the Borderlands", "The Temple of Elemental Evil", "White Plume Mountain", "Against the Giants", "The Tomb of Horrors", and the Return series. After playing in those we were hooked, and haven't stopped since. Funny thing is, we find it harder to find other gamers like us than the "steriotypical" gamer, though we'll happily play with others. :)
d00d, me too! And whenever I play with female gamers, they're all underwear models! I don't know where this gamer=geek thing came from at all...
